[INTERVIEW] [THEATRE] [Turning Audiences Into Accomplices: An Interview with director Tracie Pang, and cast members Coco Wang Ling and Ghafir Akbar on Pangdemonium’s ‘A Mirror’] Now out on Bakchormeeboy.com. “The urgency of those questions is reflected in the production’s rhythm, where there is no intermission at all, and you’re locked in with the cast for 150 minutes. “If you put an interval in, it breaks the conceit of the piece,” says Ghafir. “It’s supposed to feel like a pressure cooker and needs to stay closed long enough to cook. If you open it too early, it just doesn’t work, while balancing an urgency in telling this story as quickly as possible.”

That also ultimately extends beyond the stage. “I don’t think audience responsibility ends,” Tracie says. “Theatre is a live, breathing thing, and that’s what makes it different from film or TV. No two shows are ever identical. That’s the nature of human beings telling stories.”

Listening to the stories, Deonn has created an atmosphere of community where we, the audience, are learning alongside the actors in real-time; where the authenticity of the text is given space to resonate into every body. It is with this humility and willingness to both educate and be educated that blurs the boundaries between audience and performer, straight and q***r, young and old. It is precisely this humility that towards the end of the play, allows us to see the actors, with no supplementary costumes, as not just a generic ‘girls, girls, girls’, but singular humans carrying their own stories – as we all are. “

[REVIEW] [THEATRE] [The Trials by SRT’s The Young Company] Read now on Bakchormeeboy.com. “Ultimately, The Trials can feel repetitive and occasionally more didactic than dramatically compelling. Yet as both a training vehicle and a cautionary tale, it achieves much of what it sets out to do. Much of that credit belongs to Jenkins, whose direction successfully navigates the difficult demands of the piece while ensuring each performer has room to contribute. His programme note describes the director’s role as creating the conditions in which young actors can shine, and by that measure this production is undoubtedly successful. And if King’s script does not always match the complexity of the issues it raises, those issues remain urgent enough to linger long after the verdict has been delivered.
