Where does modern Thai culture come from?
Modern Thai culture is often described as a blend of multiple cultural influences. Among them, three major cultural groups are commonly mentioned:
The first is “Tai Yai,” a culture originating from the Shan people of Myanmar. It has been adapted by Thai people and is expressed through festivals and traditional dances, especially in Northern Thailand.
The second is “Tai Yong,” a culture influenced by Tai ethnic groups from southern China. This cultural element has been integrated into Thai traditions and social practices.
The third is “Tai Yud,” which is said to be a cultural form that Thai people adopted and transformed into their own. It includes art, writing systems, dance, and traditional clothing. Historically, it is believed to be connected to Khmer and Mon cultures, which were integrated between the 10th and 12th centuries.
👉 Culture does not develop in isolation, but rather through a process of blending and continuous evolution over time.
