A VIOLINIST'S DREAM
Sibelius Violin Concerto · Beethoven "Eroica"

The Bangkok Opera Foundation and Siam Sinfonietta present an evening of two works born of ambition. Jean Sibelius trained as a violinist and hoped to make his career as one; after an unsuccessful audition for the Vienna Philharmonic he turned to composition, and the longing he set aside found its way into the Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 — the only concerto he would ever write, and one of the most demanding in the repertoire. Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, "Eroica", stands beside it as the work that enlarged what a symphony could be: longer, weightier and more searching than anything before it, with a funeral march at its heart.

The orchestra is conducted by Trisdee na Patalung, who co-founded Siam Sinfonietta in 2010 alongside Somtow Sucharitkul and the Bangkok Opera Foundation, and who serves as resident conductor of Opera Siam. He is also music director of the Bangkok Baroque Ensemble, Thailand's first historically-informed Baroque group.

The soloist is Bhakasak Lookhin Jaowanaridhi, the orchestra's concertmaster. A graduate of the College of Music, Mahidol University, he served as concertmaster of the Mahidol Symphony Orchestra and as an intern musician with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, and continues to appear with the Thailand Philharmonic and the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra. Writing of his leadership in Maha Rajini this July, the Bangkok Post called him "surely one of the best orchestra leaders of any orchestra in this country, whether 'youth' or 'professional'."

This performance carries a particular significance for the orchestra. Bhakasak joined Siam Sinfonietta at eighteen and has led it as concertmaster for the past five years; on 13 September he makes his final appearance with us, taking the solo part in the concerto he names as his favourite — and playing it, for the first time, with an orchestra. It is a fitting close to nine years in these ranks, and the whole of Siam Sinfonietta joins in wishing him every success in what follows.

Opera Siam presents a evening of searingly romantic music to honour the memory of our beloved Queen Mother, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. Her Majesty once told Maestro Somtow of her love for Russian romanticism, and this concert will present two of the most romantic of all: Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and the moving Adagio from Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony.
For Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's 72nd Birthday, HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana commissioned a special gift from composer Somtow Sucharitkul — the creation of a romantic concerto for the instrument Her Majesty herself had loved and played ever since childhood, the piano. Her Majesty specified to Somtow that she favored the Russian style of piano concerto above all and Somtow started his Queen Sirikit Concerto very much in that tradition. But as the different movements evolved, different aspects of Her Majesty's life began to play a role: the second movement a tender andante that segues into a wild kaleidoscope of the colours and sounds of Paris in the 1950s, In the final Rondo, the music touches on the arts and sounds of Thailand and blends them all into the texture of the romantic concerto. Thailand’s prodigious pianist, composer and conductor Trisdee na Patalung will be the soloist in this soaring work.
In celebration of Her Late Majesty's life, Opera Siam presents this work in a public performance by the Siam Sinfonietta and Thailand's genius conductor and pianist Trisdee na Patalung under the baton of the composer.

Other works that will be heard that evening include a new song cycle, Maha Rajini, in a world premiere, sung by Thailand's leading opera singer Nadlada Thamtanakom. The music for the cycle came to the composer in a dream in which he saw a soprano singing in heaven showering gold on the people below. The songs set to music the words of Baudelaire, Byron, and Sunthorn Phu in their original languages, and feature a heartstopping solo by world-class Thai cellist Ekachai Maskulrat.
Other works will be featured as well include solos from Love of Siam star Witwisit Hiranyawongkul and 14-year-old singer Punnika Maheumuang.

ทว่าในแต่ละท่อนของบทเพลง (Movement) ได้สะท้อนถึงเรื่องราวในพระชนม์ชีพของพระองค์ โดยในท่อนที่สองเป็นท่วงทำนอง andante ที่อ่อนหวาน ก่อนจะส่งต่อเข้าสู่ท่วงทำนองอันสดใสและเปี่ยมไปด้วยสีสันของกรุงปารีสในยุคทศวรรษที่ 1950 และในท่อนสุดท้าย (Rondo) เสียงดนตรีได้นำเสนอศิลปวัฒนธรรมและท่วงทำนองแบบไทย ผสานเข้ากับโครงสร้างของเปียโนคอนเชอร์โตยุคโรแมนติกได้อย่างไร้รอยต่อ โดยจะถ่ายทอดผ่านฝีมือของ ทฤษฎี ณ พัทลุง นักเปียโน นักประพันธ์เพลง และผู้อำนวยเพลงอัจฉริยะของเมืองไทย ในฐานะนักเดี่ยวเปียโนสำหรับบทเพลงอันยิ่งใหญ่นี้
เพื่อเฉลิมฉลองพระชนม์ชีพของสมเด็จพระบรมราชชนนีพันปีหลวง โอเปร่าสยามมีความภูมิใจที่จะนำเสนอบทเพลงนี้ในการแสดงต่อสาธารณชน โดยวงสยาม ซินโฟเนียตตา ร่วมกับทฤษฎี ณ พัทลุง ภายใต้การอำนวยเพลงของตัวผู้ประพันธ์เอง

นอกจากนี้ บทเพลงอื่น ๆ ที่จะนำมาจัดแสดงในค่ำคืนนั้นรวมถึง ชุดบทเพลงประพันธ์ใหม่ “มหาราชินี” (Maha Rajini) ในการเปิดตัวรอบปฐมทัศน์โลก ขับร้องโดยนักร้องโอเปร่าชั้นนำของเมืองไทย Nadlada Thamtanakom (Bow) ซึ่งแรงบันดาลใจของบทเพลงชุดนี้เกิดจากความฝันของผู้ประพันธ์ ที่ได้เห็นนักร้องเสียงโซปราโนขับร้องเพลงอยู่บนสรวงสวรรค์และโปรยปรายทองคำลงมายังผู้คนเบื้องล่าง โดยบทเพลงนี้ได้นำบทกวีของโบดแลร์ (Baudelaire), ไบรอน (Byron) และสุนทรภู่ มาเรียงร้อยเข้ากับเสียงดนตรีในภาษาต้นฉบับ พร้อมทั้งการบรรเลงเชลโลโซโล่อันสะกดใจโดย เอกชัย มาสกุลรัตน์ นักเชลโลชาวไทยระดับโลก

ภายในงานยังมีการแสดงโซโล่จากศิลปินรับเชิญพิเศษ อาทิ พิช-วิชญ์วิสิฐ หิรัญวงษ์กุล ดารานักแสดงจากภาพยนตร์ รักแห่งสยาม และ น้องPunnika Maheumuang นักร้องเยาวชนวัย 14 ปี
