WELCOME TO CHAMPION SOUND AUDIO! CSA used to stand for CHAMPION SOUND ASIA - a name that was coined by it's founder, Dave Milligan in the mid 00's a few years after moving to Thailand from London where he did drum n bass events as a teenager in the 1990s.

The name CHAMPION SOUND harks back to Jamaican soundsystem days - they who had the best soundsystem (not just meaning the system itself, but also the exclusive tracks they played & hyped the crowd up) - had the CHAMPION SOUND.

Under this banner & ethos, Dave booked & promoted over 1200+ shows, Asia-wide, featuring artist such as The Chemical Brothers, Skrillex, Andy C, Laurent Garnier, Fatboy Slim, Frankie, Knuckles, Major Lazer, Pendulum, Jazzy Jeff, Sven Vath, Ricardo Villalobos, Roy Ayers, DJ Craze, Armand Van Helden & many, many more.

Although the main focus of the project has changed, Dave will still be doing the occasional event featuring music he loves; underground drum n bass & house techno, jazz, funk & beyond... he has also teamed up with legendary UK drum n bass MC for a project of DJ/live shows & he has a release forthcoming on Armada recordings in January 2026 alongside one of the UK's most influential drum n bass artists of all time - DJ Fresh (aka BAD COMPANY).

Now in his mid forties, Dave stepped away from the party lifestyle & felt he'd done all he could & ticked off pretty much every bucket list tick anyone in electronic music possibly could have done, including releasing his own music on top labels & having a legitimate hit record under his belt.

What does remain is what got him into this whole thing in the first place... a very pure love for music, of many genres. Being spoilt by top of the line club soundsystems & a penchant for playing music at higher volume than most... Dave discovered just how far 'head-fi' had advanced & he felt the need to be part of it.

"most people just aren't aware of how incredible music can sound at home, in your own little bubble with some headphones which will put you in the middle of a concert hall, or some bss heavy IEMs that will make you feel like you're in a club with an incredible soundsystem... yet most people seem content with heavily marketed wireless earbuds from the likes of Apple, Sony & Samsung - if you truly love music, these absolutely will not cut it - they are crap. In the same way I wanted to bring incredible artists to Asia, I want to introduce people to a better way of experiencing music".

His CSA YouTube channel launches soon & will be releasing his first products imminently.

The game may have changed, but the ethos remains the same - giving people fantastic musical experiences.

ภายใต้แนวคิดและปรัชญานี้ เดฟได้เป็นโปรโมเตอร์คอนเสิร์ตมากกว่า 1,200++ รายการทั่วเอเชีย โดยมีศิลปินอย่าง The Chemical Brothers, Skrillex, Andy C, Laurent Garnier, Fatboy Slim, Frankie, Knuckles, Major Lazer, Pendulum, Jazzy Jeff, Sven Vath, Ricardo Villalobos, Roy Ayers, DJ Craze, Armand Van Helden และอีกมากมาย

After one month - the WiiM Ultra streamer - from a personal audio user only's perspective.

I'm fortunate enough to have four excellent personal audio amp/dacs to enjoy my music through - and around 15 pairs of headphones/IEMs.

Overkill? Probably. I worked in music for 25 years and was involved for almost 30. I got out on a professional level during covid as I got seriously ill & almost died. This issue also made my existing disaster of a lower back... this issue (although my doctors said otherwise, but I found it hard to believe - well, I don't believe it didn't significantly contribute) was caused by heavy use of drugs & alcohol. I was also working on a pretty high level & surrounded by peers' who only talked about money - I made good money, but it was only through my love of music & determination to make good shows happen. The money seemed to be the only thing that people around me were interested in. Between the lifestyle & my peers being utterly insufferable, I decided to quit during covid after a totally unrelated passion project (seling vintage Japanese cinema art - also a 30+ year obsession since I was a child) blew up & provided me with enough cash to live comfortably. Fortunately I'm finally back to making music, DJ-ing (once a month) & putting on small shows with artists I love, with the motivation not being remotely financial.

Sorry for the digression - but I love music. And not being surrounded by it several nights a week on excellent soundsystems was something I missed.. so off down the rabbit hole I went.

I'd amassed a pretty good collection of gear within a couple of years -including four excellent amp/dacs; a Sony DMP-Z1, a Cayin HA-1A MK2, a Topping DX9 & the beautiful little box of sheer witchcraft that is the Chord Mojo 2. Isn't this little thing incredible??? I couldn't recommend another piece of gear to anyone so easily.

The problem was that I was having to do lots of fiddling every time I wanted to use a different source for streaming & it would lead to certain devices not being used as often as they would without.... a solution!

It was quite serendipitous that the WiiM Ultra happened to pop up as soon as I started looking for a streamer... $329 for something that would easily solve my problem (and then some).

This thing seems to be capable of a hell of a lot more than what I use it for, but it did exactly what I was looking for, and that's all I really know about... and seeing this is a headphone group, I imagine there are a few of you that will be in a similar situation to myself. There will also be an anti-streaming mob who will be enraged that I use a Sony DMP-Z1 for streaming... don't worry, I buy everything I discover/love and dump it onto one of the two1.5TB micro SD's that are housed in the slots in Sony's beautiful beast.

That said...I am totally happy with streaming quality. The DMP-Z1 is the only device where I do notice a small difference in quality between downloaded flacs & lossless streams. But I absolutely love streaming & I think Tidal's algorithm is phenomenal; it's really honed in on the specifics of my taste & I can just leave it on all day, skipping very occasionally & scribbling down the name of an artist/track/album I love so I can check out more of their stuff & buy what I love so I'lI have it for unrestricted use... but I do love the seemingly endless discovery of music that streaming with an algorithm that knows me pretty well can provide, regardless of what I'm in the mood for.

To be able to do this on any device with any set of headphones/IEMs effortlessly, all controlled from my phone is an absolute godsend.

I saw some reviewers complain about the screen on the WiiM Ultra & that had me scratching my head. I only ever really use it to change my source via touch & it's on auto off the rest of the time. What else do people need a screen for, really?

The touchscreen is fast & responsive - never had an issue - super simple controls. I've never owned anything fancier, but I struggle to imagine what else I'd really need.

My only hang up is not being able to use it with Apple Music - one of the only two services worth having in Thailand (no Qobuz here) but honestly, given Tidal's algorithm, it's my app of choice anyway. But I would absolutely like to have the option - so that is a negative.
Asides from that caveat - which is a caveat, and it is of significance, if only mildly so - this thing does everything I wanted it to, and a hell of a lot more, apparently.
If there's a workaround for Apple, or anything else anyone with a similar use case to mine likes about the WiiM that 1 haven't mentioned, please feel free to comment.

For me, it's a 9.7/10, losing 0.3 points for no Apple integration, which is likely down to Apple being pricks anyway.

How does $3000 sound!?

A hell of a lot of cash for a pair of IEMs, but do these 15 driver per side hybrids justify the enormous price tag? They certainly look the part...

I'll be doing a full review in a couple of weeks. I'd really rather get a proper feel for them first.

This is my second pair of Qdc IEM's - the first were the legendary ANOLE VX.

I've had their current flagship the QDC EMPEROR for a few weeks now, but have only just got around to listening to them properly as I only use custom eartips made from a semi firm silicone (a project I'll be launching soon as they really do make any IEM sound so much better due to a perfect seal... and they're far more comfortable than any universal fur tip) - and these have such a huge nozzle, I had to get a new pair made to fit both the IEMs & my ear canal perfectly.

Thanks to our new followers... this page is just something to get things moving (slowly!) until we launch the YouTube channel & from then we will be turning it into a group.

I got heavily into personal audio because I worked in live music for many years; promoting & touring electronic/hip hop/jazz acts for over 20 years - and although I don't miss the lifestyle, but I really missed experiencing the music on incredible soundsystems & personal audio is the closest I've gotten to experiencing that again.

I've also started making my own music again & am working on my own range of audio products... just like it was with getting involved with doing live music shows, I have to start very small & just keep moving. This is very much a passion project :) ~ Dave.

One driver brilliance. An enormously unexpected treat that made me re-think my naivety on what a single, beautiful, driver can do in a world of ten driver IEMs being all the hype. The Final A8000.

I got these in very fortunate circumstances . And I'm extremely fortunate that they happened, otherwise I just would not have ever tried these... and they taught me a very valuable lesson.

I had, very naievly, pretty much written off single DD IEMs. I think my last straw was the much loved Sennheiser IE600/IE900... they did absolutely nothing remotely good for me, and being widely touted as the best that single driver has to offer & loved by so many. I don't mean to offend anyone who loves them... but to my ears... that driver is total crap. We all have different ears, it's all subjective etc, and you may hear them very differently to how I do.

But what I can tell you from a lot of conversations with a lot of other music lovers who want to experience the music they love in best way possible... I certainly wasn't alone in being put off single DD's by the IE series.

I got caught up in all the multi driver fuss & I do have a very high opinion of EST drivers (and my absolute favourite pair, the Thieaudio Prestige Ltd) - I think they can do things that nothing else can, but different doesn't always mean better. But I do absolutely love variety.

I have a fairly lean selection of high end IEMs - six pairs, to be precise... and I'd say, after going through dozens of loaners (I'm fortunate enough to have a couple of ex demo sellers & trusted, wealthy acquaintances who buy LOTS is IEMs, only to put them up for sale within days of acquiring them, only because they prefer something that I don't personally like - again, different ears. I got these, in essentially new condition in exchange for a spare pair of Mest MK2 & the equivalent of $165 USD. I wasn't even convinced that I'd be happy with this, but I knew if worst came to worst, I'd sell them on.

The A8000 have been said by quite a few people to share a lot of similarities with the Focal Utopia headphones - I've never tried the Utopia (I own the Clear MG & the very divisive Celestee - which I love).

The A8000 are stunning to look at - they're very small, exceptionally comfortable (although the IE series does have them/everything beat here) & look like a piece of very nice, tasteful & ultra modern silver jewellery.

The first thing that I listened to them on was the classic Alice Colrane album, Journey In Satchidanada - a beautifully recorded (and beautiful, period) album (especially for a live album), besides from some harp strings which sound a little distorted at the beginning of the first track. It was hard to believe I was listening to one single DD (one big, beautiful, Berilliyum DD) with the incredible sense of imaging & seperation.

I've heard this album countless times & it was honestly one of my favourite ever listens to this masterpiece.

The imaging & seperation was out of this world, and the balance of sound was exceptional - with one caveat. If you're sensitive to silibance or higher frequency sounds - these may not be for you, straight out of the box anyway. Personally I'm no out of the box purist. I'll happily use the DSP on the Mojo 2 to add a little bottom end, or shave a little high end away should I feel the need (especially when I wake up & my ears are a bit sensitive). The other issue I have with out of the box purists - and this is after 30 years of being heavily involved with music as a musician, DJ, promoter of 1200+ shows of all genres/A&R for independent labels. Not all recordings are the same.

Even as the most entry level 'performer' in music - a professional DJ - you learn this very quickly. Those EQ's are there for a reason & it's not to twiddle around with with the volume down & make it look like you're doing far more than you actuality are. Yes you'll often cut the bass when you're mixing in a new track, but the main thing is that you want everything sounding on a similar level throughout your set. There's nothing worse than going from one track to another, only for the bass to be at a much lower volume than the previous track, or the treble sounding significantly sharper. It's extremely rare, if ever, that you're touching the mids - that should be an overall volume thing.

It's the same with listening to music & that's why I feel the DSP on the Chord Mojo 2 is the best portable tool for the job & also highly effective in much bigger setups.

My partner is quite sensitive to silibance & she loves the A8000 - as long as a bit of the high end is shaved off with certain recordings.

These things are truly magical & are surprisingly good all rounders - nothing sounds bad on these, everything sounds good from heavier rock like Nirvana, to all forms of jazz, pop, electronic. I wouldn't have believed this was a single DD set had I not known.

My biggest issue with these is the RRP. They're a $2000 set & I understand that prices them out of range for a lot of people... but after about ten weeks use would I buy at full price (as mentioned before, I absolutely didn't). It would be an ever so slightly tough call & I'd certainly shop around as I imagine there are some deals on these now given their age (they're a truly timeless set though). That said, I don't get less enjoyment out of them than other 2000-3000 sets I own... so I guess that's a yes & my bias towards them being single DD is still slightly, stupidly lingering.

Simply put, they're a phenomenal, gorgeous pair of IEMs that I wil treasure for years to come.

One more thing - I exclusively use custom tips (as per picture) - getting the right tips for these is ESSENTIAL. The stock Final Type E are actually really good (for me), but again, your ears may differ to mine.

I CIEM'd my favourite IEM's...

I've had these beauties for almost one year & it was love at first listen. Since then, despite going through many, many pairs that I've borrowed, bought & sold, and owning circa 15 pairs of high end IEMs & mid-high headphones, these have received 50% of my overall listening time. They have a lot of EST's (8 total), a driver type I just find adds, if implemented correctly, so much depth to the sound & absolutely incredible imaging/seperation - something really important to me as I listen to a lot of jazz (more new school stuff such as Mathew Halsall, Chip Wickham, and my absolute favourite - Nick Bärtsch's RONIN project). I also listen to a lot of funk, soul, drum n bass, deep house (real deep house; St Germain etc - not whatever this current garbage they're slapping that label onto)... MOST of what I listen to sounds great. For rock, I love Nirvana & my favourite tracks from Nevermind & In Utero were a mixed bag; with heavier cuts sounding ok & less full on numbers sounding great... Nirvana unplugged sounded as good as I've ever heard it. It didn't matter. I had sets that could do that & NO SET does everything perfectly.

The THIEAUDIO Prestige Ltd were an unlikely end to but myself something special for Xmas last year. I'd gone to my local dealer thinking that I'd probably be buying Monarch MK2 or MK3 after all the hurrah. I wasn't especially built up about either, but I was hoping to be impressed by one (or both).

I tried them & I wouldn't say I was disappointed (no expectations - no disappointments) - but they didn't really do much for me & I'm not going to slap a grand down on something I found to not really add anything to my artillery.

Just before I left the store, the manager passed me the not much discussed (at that point) Prestige Ltd - a set with little buzz & a high price point.

I couldn't pay him quickly enough & seldom a few hours go past where I don't use them.

They're going nowhere, the ports were becoming a little loose through changing cables too many times/constant use (my biggest gripe with Thieaudio products is thst although they offer tremendous value in terms of the tech you get for the cash - the resin shells are not very durable.

I decided to take the plunge & get them CIEM'd - my partner in my upcoming project believed he was up to task, I gave my design instructions & he got to it. It took him a few goes to get the shell right (4 EST's per side along with the rest) is a lot to pack in.

I was concerned about tuning changes as these were, to me, 10/10 perfection. He has a little microphone thing that measures the sound & they graphed almost identically.

More importantly - they sounded almost identical, but just better. That absolutely perfect seal led to much improved bass (these are far from a basshead set - but thst beautiful 1DD Thieaudio uses in these packs a punch when it matters). Imaging & seperation were improved significantly & I cannot stop listening to them.

I'll be amazed if I ever find another IEM I ever get as much joy out of as I do these... I'm listening to the as I write this & they really are special.

**THE BEST ALL DAY BASSHEAD SET THAT EXISTS. THE Campfire Audio ASTROLITH... plus a more budget friendly pick... **

This review was done after six weeks of regular use with the Astrolith in order to avoid recency bias, or as I call it 'new toy syndrome'.

If you'd told me two months ago that my quest for the ultimate basshead IEM was going to come from Campfire, I'd have told that you were nuts. If you told me it was going to be a planar, I'd have written you off completely.

That said... I like being surprised & I am open minded.

My journey to get to sub low nirvana has been long, expensive & full of disappointments.

I'd owned both of the cheaper Fatfreq (Singaporean boutique IEM company who specialise in bass heavy IEMs) pairs; the Maestro Mini & the Scarlett Mini... whilst I did think both were impressive in what they did, I couldn't enjoy them as a rounded experience - and they were certainly very fatiguing for longer than thirty minutes. What they do is actually very impressive & although the Scarlett was a bit of a step in the right direction over the MM, offering even deeper bass yet improving overall balance (especially with the treble)... I still found them extremely inadequate as a complete listening experience.

I sold both & upgraded to the Maestro SE (which are currently getting CIEM'd by Fatfreq) - much better, but I can't listen to them all day. I do like them very much & they're a fantastic addition to any low end fiend's artillery - again, they are fatiguing, although not nearly as much as their aforementioned little brothers. I actually ended up using these for music that used those deeper tones far more sparingly - mostly jazz, my other true love.

I wanted something that I could listen to drum n bass on for hours on end that wouldn't cause fatigue, but would deliver a deep, rich, resin-rattle free (a big issue with all the Fatfreq, but at the same time, part of their appeal).

I listened to dozens of pairs and blind bought a few including standouts such as Fir's XE6 (actually very good, but didn't quite hit the mark), the 64 Audio Volour (my biggest disappointment) & the classic - which I love & will never, ever sell - the Sony IER-1ZR.

I was quite content with the Sony's (and I still am, just not in the same way - they're absolutely fantastic & there's a reason they are regarded as a classic - I also don't find them the least bit uncomfortable, (even with regular tips - their stock 'triple comfort' tips are excellent, but I only use custom tips - as per image two) something that I believe has been blown way out of proportion (reasoning: I know a lot of people who own them & not one person has complained about them). I believe this widely spun 'uncomfortable' yarn comes from a few things; they're going to have been sold at a much higher volume than any other bass heavy IEM, so the vocal minority will be louder... and they look as if they could potentially be uncomfortable... so I think a lot of the naysayers are people who haven't even tried them & are making assumptions based on the above.

Although my quest was, I thought, concluded, a friend lent me his Campfire Audio Supermoon; a single driver planar set. I thought they were absolutely superb, but lacked the treble I craved. Enter their newer, bigger brother - the Campfire Audio Astrolith. The Astrolith were very similar to the Supermoon, but they had one smaller planar driver that was purely to handle treble. These were an educated blind buy; with the second driver focused firmly on treble, the main driver was free to do more with the bass & mids. It was akin to having a hanging tweeter array in a sophisticated nightclub soundsystem.

My guesstimate was absolutely on the money - incredibly accurate midrange, as you'd expect from a quality planar driver, phenomenal sub bass (I do occasionally push the bass up using the DSP on a my Chord Mojo 2 pocket dac/amp - something anyone could get away with using a simple software EQ tweak).

After around six weeks with them so that 'new toy syndrome' has most certainly passed - I can say with absolute confidence they are the best pair I have ever used that allowed me to enjoy bass heavy music for hours on end.

This pair are not cheap at close to $2000 USD. But if you can afford that & will use them very frequently, you're in for a serious treat.

My more budget friendly pick do come with a caveat. You need to push the bass up as the out of the box tuning is not in basshead territory - but the Thieaudio Hype 4 are more than capable of giving you an excellent, all day basshead sound for a few hundred USD.
