kha Original textile work is shipped directly from the Akha Tribes Northern Thailand locations. The artisans’ villages are nestled in the mountains of the Golden Triangle on the Thai / Miramar Boarder. The Akha Women of The Hill Tribe are ‘Experts’ in the Art of Embroidery and Tapestry. Although very labor intensive, today it still is a daily chore. The Akha have not sold much of their expert embroidery work outside the tribe; in fact, it is mainly gifted or sold within the tribe. They've produced it primarily for their elaborate garments, handbags, embroidered jackets and distinctive leg stockings. Recently Pimprapha the Founder of AkhaOriginals.com began designing objects of art with western appeal using the same methods and styles in the ancient tribe’s history. The length of time it takes to create these originals works of art make them a Labor of Love seldom seen in today’s world. An Akha Artistic blanket takes 1200 to 1500 hours of intensely detailed sewing to complete. The color matching and precision textile cutting are truly amazing! Other works like the Tapestry Wall Art or Tablecloths are estimated to take 1000 hours. Smaller Objects like a Decorative Artistic Pillow or Kitchen Apron a Hand Bag or Wall Tapestry Art take 150 to 300 hours to complete. The difficult stitching and patterns can only be accomplished by the very experienced. The elders and older siblings of their families are skilled though decades of making their own embroidered clothes.

It's hard to say which brings the greatest pleasure, welcoming new volunteer teachers into the fold or the pride we feel when they leave us and embark on their journeys to teach in Thailand and beyond. We have been blessed by these 2 and the wonderful energy they brought to Pennies for Papa. Come back and visit us often!

A new curriculum established by our new Academic Director, "Bee" requires placement tests for everyone. Teacher Yolly helps move things along. What a great addition to the team they are. And the students are committed to the program.

When you come to Pennies for Papa you have an opportunity to do more than teach or get certified to teach. You have an opportunity to get involved in the community and even individual families. Toby has even helped this family build a new home. And now he is like a family member. A PRICELESS experience! And he loves his Akha jacket and shoulder bag they made for him :-)

Another awesome week in the Akha Village. We ended with a lesson on family structure for the younger kids. The older ones had to endure Tony and Toby dancing to a rap song about "All You Can Eat for $3.99. 555 (same as lol in Thailand)

Public school starts tomorrow. But the village children have been coming to our free English classes for 2 weeks already. And we teachers have enjoyed the local cuisine after class
