SIKHONA — The inaugural exhibition at Eswatini Theatre Club, SIKHONA brings together five Swazi women artists to explore womanhood, identity and inherited memory through photography, painting, pottery, glass and digital work. Curated by Xolelwa Malinga and Phetsemajali Shongwe, the show traces girlhood, family teachings and intergenerational memories that shape who we are.

Opening Sat 15 Aug, 18:00–20:00. Part of the Culture, Spaces, Context grantees, supported by the Austrian Embassy Pretoria and the Austrian Cultural Forum.

Photos from last week’s Culture Spaces Context talk with local artists Thobile Makhoyane and Xolelwa Malinga moderated by Thandeka Malaza. This was attended by cultural producers and artists. The event started with a reception for a Fulbright specialist Dr. Heidelberg hosted by Antidote Culture Foundation.

This activity is supported by the Austrian Embassy in Pretoria.

This Friday Thandeka “Tea” Malaza speaks to two local artists who have been consistent in their practice.

Thobile Makhoyane’s work transcends genres and categories. She’s largely known for her work with Spirit Indigenous, but what really is a constant in Thobile’s practice is collaboration. She has worked with DJs, dancers, choreographers and sound designers. Thobile will be sharing with us how she has managed a career spanning over 20 years.

Joining her is Xolelwa Malinga a multidisciplinary artist whose work appears in some of the most important platforms for visual arts. She has shown her work at RMB Latitudes, Miami Art Basel and recently won WORLDART10. Xolelwa has been silently carving her way in the contemporary art world.

Beautiful show this past Saturday from Beyond Limits as part of their Freedom 250 Showcase. It was a full house of hip hop and dance enthusiasts.
