We permaculturists are probably the best-equipped people in the world to handle an energy and food cost crisis that we are most certainly headed for.

You see, permaculture was originally developed in the late 70-ties as a thoughtful and serious response to a low-energy future. Influenced by The Limits to Growth report, its very purpose was to give us the design tools and skills to live abundantly despite the decline in the living standard.

Think of some of the design solutions we use in permaculture, and you'll see what I mean:

- we put our water tanks high in the landscape so that we can irrigate by gravity, eliminating the need for energy-dependent pumps
- we put our roads on contours so that we use less energy to travel across the landscape we are stewarding
- we orient our houses towards the south to capture sunlight so that we spend less energy on heating
- we grow food by utilizing existing natural processes to rely less on energy-intensive inputs and invest less labor - our life energy.

Permaculture was designed to help us weather the energy crises, food cost increases, and potential shortages.

That's why I'm very much optimistic about my and your future. We'll be able to handle whatever gets thrown our way as we are equipped with the 'secret' knowledge.

And when the time comes, and ordinary folks are ready to listen, we'll help them join 'team permaculture' and together work on a better future for all of us.
