Djibril Drame is a Senegalese visual artist based in Dakar after living in Los Angeles for years.

Senegalese filmmaker, Djibril Diop Mambety, Senegalese musician, Wasis Diop, graffiti artist Jean Michel Basquiat, Louise Bourgeois, Niki de Saint Phalle, Chaz Guest, Docta (The Grandfather of Senegalese Graffiti), and Bibi Seck are my art inspirations. Scientist Cheikh Anta Diop and boxer Muhammad Ali (poetry), Serigne Touba, Elon Musk, and Abdoulaye Wade are my non-art inspirations.

I started photography at the age of 15, and being recognised on the continent especially in the region where my great-grandparents are from is incredibly meaningful.

My sincere thanks to the Artistic Director, Aremelle Dakouo, and her entire team for this honour and for their commitment to celebrating African photography.

Congratulations to all my fellow artists who were also selected. I can’t wait to share this experience with you all.

My focus has been my residency at Overt Art Gallery and my exhibition at Pol & Grace. But the longer I stay, the more I find myself drawn to the stories unfolding beyond the gallery walls.

For over 15 years, Melissa and her friends have organized streetball in Sants—not as an event, but as a tradition. A community built through consistency, open courts, and the simple act of showing up. It’s about far more than basketball. It’s about belonging, friendship, and creating space for people to connect.

I realized I wanted to document it.

Not to tell their story for them, but to witness it. To capture the rhythm of the games, the conversations between plays, the generations sharing the same court, and the culture that has quietly grown around it over the years.

W a a ñ W i takes its name from the Wolof word for kitchen—a space where matter, memory, and relation are transformed. The project treats the kitchen as an epistemic site of care, repetition, and collective labor. Drawing on bell hooks’ concept of homeplace and Ken Bugul’s Le Baobab Fou, it positions the kitchen as a vital space where survival, dignity, and political imagination are produced. Developed during a residency in Dëkandoo, Senegal, W a a ñ W i
emerges through relational encounters: conversations, meals, songs, and material practice. Dialogue with Absa Guindo, director of Këru Jigeen Ñi, shifted authorship from individual to collective,
grounding the project in feminist collaboration.A key moment occurred during a workshop with cere mbuum (couscous and moringa) and songs by Aminata Fall. Cooking
became both practice and framework, activating memory and transmitting cultural knowledge horizontally. Six paintings respond to Fall’s Kan Fore, translating sound into material resonance,
informed by hooks’ notion of talking back and Bugul’s literary voice……………………….
