In 2022, I created a series focused on the secondhand clothing industry, particularly as it related to Dakar, Senegal, where I was living at the time. The series examined and drew attention to the secondhand clothing industry and the broader world of fast fashion. I wanted people to question their choices and think beyond simply dropping a garbage bag of used clothes at a local thrift store, considering instead the environmental and economic impact these clothes have on the communities where they are often shipped to live a second life or, more often than not, end up as environmental hazards or in landfills.
I created five pieces in total, including a bomber jacket made from the multiple sheets of tin foil that I used to mix paint on while painting the series itself. The work was exhibited alongside a group of incredible artists in a gallery participating in the “OFF” Biennial, a staple of Senegal’s art world and the first one in four years since Covid had cancelled the 2020 event.
