"Sunday," Maurizio Cattelan’s first solo gallery exhibition in more than two decades and his solo debut at Gagosian, is now on view at the gallery at West 21st Street in New York. The show is curated by Francesco Bonami.

In a new installation, "Sunday" (2024), Cattelan compounds the response to economic inequality embodied by "America" (2016), using precious metal to deconstruct the country’s relationship to the accessibility of weapons (a condition against which privilege affords no defense). ☁️ La volonté de liberté artistique oblige parfois des artistes à fuir leur patrie afin de pouvoir créer. C’était le cas d’un groupe d’artistes non-conformistes, les « Rebel Spirits », qui avaient dû quitter la Russie au XXe siècle. À cette période, le régime soviétique régissait la créativité et les artistes se devaient de peindre ce qu’on leur ordonnait sous peine de réprimande.

L’un des artistes de ce groupe rebelle était Vasily Sitnikov. Sa vie en Russie était régie par des séjours en prison et hôpitaux psychiatriques imposés par les autorités soviétiques. Il partait pour les États-Unis dans les années 80, et laissait libre cours à son art, osant peindre des nus, qu’on retrouve dans cette œuvre de 1984. Utilisant une technique inventée lors de ses études dans son pays natal, Sitnikov réalise un effet d’ombrage qui entoure les personnages et évoque la brume dans une ambiance onirique.

How France is preparing to sink its own art market.

In twenty years, France has risen from 3% to 7% of the world’s art market.
It alone weighs half of the European market. But by adopting an EU directive that raises taxes from 5.5% to 20%, France is the only one of the 27 member countries to shoot itself in the foot.

Should we really let the French art market be killed in silence?

This is an unprecedented increase in the price of works that will jeopardize the very survival of our artists and our galleries. No sector has ever accepted such an increase in VAT.

It is imperative that we obtain a cultural exception for our field so as not to call into question the good dynamics of our fragile ecosystem.

In the name of cultural exception and in defense of France's interests, it is vital to obtain an exception to the implementation of this directive or to begin the process of its renegotiation by transposing the directive.

Doit on vraiment laisser le marché de l’art français se faire tuer en silence ?

C’est une hausse sans précédent du prix des œuvres qui mettra en péril la survie même de nos artistes et de nos galeries. Aucune profession n'a jamais accepté une telle augmentation de sa TVA.

Il faut impérativement que nous obtenions une exception culturelle pour notre domaine pour ne pas remettre en question la bonne dynamique de notre ecosystème fragile.

Au nom de l’exception culturelle et de la défense des intérêts de la France, il est vital d’obtenir une exception à l’application de cette directive ou d’entamer le processus de sa renégociation au terme d’un moratoire à sa transposition.
