As a lecturer, if students consistently fail your module, it should be a slap on your face. In countries where the interests and rights of students are being protected, a lecturer will be queried, reprimanded, or even f!red if students repeatedly fail his/her module.
In Sierra Leone, the reverse is the case. Our universities celebrate and revere lectures who fail hundreds of students every year. Those lectures are considered the best-performing lectures because they simply don’t allow many students to pass their modules. Lectures, whose modules the students pass regularly, are usually queried. I have over five instances to make, but I will save that for a later post.
As lecturers, our goal is simple — simplify/elucidate the module concepts for the students. Our success should be determined by the number of students who understand when we lecture. Thus, we should constantly think about different teaching methods to apply in the classroom.
DISCLAIMER: This post is not, in any way, suggesting that lecturers should not fail students if they (students) deserve to fail. The reality is that some students work VERY HARD to fail — they don’t attend lectures; they don’t submit assignments; they don’t write tests; they only show up during exams. Such students should fail with flying colours.
However, many lecturers have also made their classrooms boring. They spend half of their lecture time brag about their accomplishments and the remainder of the time to tell the students about how st*pid they (students) are. In fact, I once had a lecturer who used to tell our class that his goal was to confuse and not convince us. Hence, if we were confused, then he was doing a perfect job.😂
