BELIEVE IT, OR LEAVE IT: DR. SENGEH HAS NOTHING TO PROVE — Here’s Why
©️ Bockarie Abdel Aziz Bawoh
Believe it or not, I’ve followed the conversation around Dr. David Moinina Sengeh—the current Chief Minister of Sierra Leone—with keen interest. Across all political aisles, questions continue to swirl:
• Is he well-known within the SLPP?
• Is he mature enough to lead?
• Does he have the experience to govern a nation?
• Is he electable?
• Is he too young? Too arrogant?
• Why do people support him?
Let’s take these one at a time.
1. Is Dr. Sengeh Well-Known in the SLPP?
This question is nuanced. While Dr. Sengeh may not have been an active party politician before 2018, his name and face are widely recognized across Sierra Leone. His impactful tenure as Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education—particularly through digital communication and nationwide outreach—made him a household name.
Even beyond his work, the *Sengeh name carries weight.* His parents—Mr. Paul Sengeh (formerly of UNICEF) and Mrs. Sengeh (a respected educator in Bo)—have made their own mark across the country. Where the Chief Minister’s name may not reach, his family’s legacy often does.
Internationally, Dr. Sengeh stands as a modern face of Sierra Leone, often featured in global leadership spaces.
2. Is He Mature Enough to Lead the SLPP?
The record speaks for itself. Dr. Sengeh has been entrusted with some of the party’s most sensitive and strategic responsibilities by the SLPP National Executive Council, including:
• Chairing the National Delegates Conference where President Bio was re-elected party leader.
• Facilitating the Women’s Leader re-election process after a deadlock.
• Chairing the SLPP Constitution Review Committee.
Beyond party lines, he leads the *Tripartite Committee negotiations* with the APC and serves as Chief Minister in President Bio’s administration. If that’s not a mark of political maturity and institutional trust, what is?
3. Does He Have the Experience to Lead a Country?
Here’s the truth: no one is ever fully prepared to lead a nation until they do it. But if experience is measured by exposure, impact, and leadership, Dr. Sengeh brings outstanding credentials:
• Chair of global forums at the United Nations.
• Member of the UN Secretary-General’s 24-member Committee of Experts on Public Administration.
• Leader of national reforms in education, science, and governance.
If global leadership, systems thinking, and negotiation are signs of readiness, he has already passed the test.
4. Is He Ready? Can He Win a National Election?
That’s a decision for the SLPP. But what Sierra Leone undeniably needs is a leader who can:
• Build on President Bio’s legacy,
• Earn the trust of both citizens and the international community, and
• Transform grassroots momentum into national progress.
Whether Dr. Sengeh becomes that choice is up to the party—but his capability is not in question.
5. Why Do People Support Him? Isn’t He Too Young?
Maybe it’s his ideas. Maybe it’s how he speaks—directly, boldly, and with a clear message of inclusion, justice, and innovation. His communication style resonates, especially with youth and everyday Sierra Leoneans who see in him a refreshing break from the status quo.
His age isn’t a weakness—it’s a strength. It brings energy, fresh thinking, and relatability to an increasingly younger electorate.
*6. Is He Too Arrogant?*
From what I’ve seen, this accusation doesn’t hold water. In many cases, those who label someone as “arrogant” are simply those who lack the access they feel entitled to.
Let’s talk about real access:
Dr. Sengeh dances gorboi in Pujehun. He plays football with students in Kabala and kicks around with Wusum Stars in Bombali. He rides okadas in Freetown, walks through markets, watches football at ataya bases, and plays draughts in Dwarzark.
You can’t fake that kind of diverse and authentic engagement. That’s not arrogance—that’s connection.
Final Word
Dr. Sengeh doesn’t need to prove his popularity, credentials, or readiness. He has already earned trust, built credibility, and demonstrated leadership in some of the most complex and high-stakes environments—both locally and globally.
Sierra Leone is at a crossroads. The question isn’t whether Dr. Sengeh is ready — he’s been ready.
The real question is:
*Can Sierra Leone afford to ignore a leader who combines integrity, intellect, and genuine connection with the people?*
Leadership moments come once in a generation. This may be one of them.
