Gaza on Screen

Gaza on Screen (Duke University Press, 2023) is a groundbreaking collection that examines how Gaza has been represented through moving images, and how those images circulate locally and globally. Edited by scholar Nadia Yaqub, the volume brings together filmmakers, critics, and academics to trace Gaza’s complex visual ecosystem, from militant cinema and humanitarian footage to experimental video art and social media.

Contributors such as Basma Alsharif, Azza El-Hassan, Mohamed Jabaly, the Nasser brothers, and Abdelsalam Shehada reflect on the politics of filming under siege, the ethics of representation, and the relationship between image-making and survival.

غزة على الشاشة (جامعة ديوك، 2023) هو عمل يستكشف كيف مثلت غزة في الصور المتحركة، وكيف تتنقّل هذه الصور محليًا وعالميًا. حررته الباحثة نادية يعقوب، ويجمع الكتاب صناع أفلام ونقادًا وأكاديميين لتتبّع النظام البصري الدقيق والمعقد المتعلق خصيصًا بغزة، من سينما المقاومة والتصوير الإنساني إلى فن الفيديو التجريبي ووسائل التواصل الاجتماعي.

يجمع الكتاب مساهمون مثل بسمة الشريف، عزة الحسن، محمد جبالي، الإخوان ناصر، وعبد السلام شحادة، الذين يقدمون رؤى حول سياسات التصوير تحت الحصار، أخلاقيات التمثيل، وعلاقة الصور بالبقاء.

Die Verwendung von Ironie und Humor mit Genderbezug gegen patriarchale Macht hat in der Geschichte feministischer Politiken eine lange Tradition. Im künstlerischen Aktivismus verbindet sie häusliche Referenzen mit Gesellschaftskritik und karnevalesker Ästhetik.
In der Zeit nach dem Ende der Militärdiktatur in Argentinien diente der abwesende weibliche Körper in El Corbiniño, einem überdimensionalen BH, der von einem Frauenkollektiv unter der Leitung von Cristina „Kikí“ Roca geschaffen wurde, als Chiffre für die Politik, die in Córdoba ihren Anfang nahm.
Die ironische Reaktion der Künstlerinnen („Wie lange noch ...“) auf eine maskulinistische Äußerung des damaligen Provinzgouverneurs („... müssen wir ihr [der Krise] die Brust bieten ...“) ist auf ein Etikett geschrieben, das zwischen den BH-Körbchen baumelt.

The use of gendered irony and humor against patriarchal power has a long tradition in feminist political history, blending domestic references with social commentary and carnivalesque aesthetics in engaged artistic practices.
In Argentina's post-dictatorship era, the absent female body in El Corpiño, a realistic rendition of a monumental brassiere created by a women's collective led by Cristina "Kiki" Roca, acts as a cipher for national politics in Córdoba, a city with its own long history of resistance against Argentina's dictatorship.
The artists' tongue-in-cheek response ("Until when...") to a statement by the provincial governor ("...we have to put out our chests...") is written on a tag dangling between the bra's two cups.
