What Can You Learn from a Dance
Reflections of an Observant Tango Dancer

Dancing taught me to trust my intuition.

I used to distrust it quite a lot. “If you can't explain how you arrived at a conclusion, you shouldn't trust it.”

That's how I used to feel, before the dancing.

At the start, I would just rotate the figures I learned. It became quite boring once I realized how out of sync with the music I was. So, for the sake of experiment, I would leave the figures and ask myself:

“What feels right to do?”

I didn't really like the answer. It felt too simple.

But it felt right. It felt nice. I would realize that I liked simple steps that went with the music better than figures that didn't.

I would also realize that I wasn't able to process music through active thinking in the moment. But there was a musical intuition that could come up with an answer. A simple one, but an answer nonetheless.

Since then, I started giving that intuition more room. Over time, the simple answers became more complex. And I was surprised that my mind would come up with them spontaneously, in the middle of dancing, without actively thinking.

Eventually, I started wondering: _What if this works outside the dance floor too?_

I tried it with speaking.

At first, it was quite scary. Not having a carefully prepared sentence in my head felt like giving up control. But the pattern was surprisingly similar. Simple answers at first, but with practice, they became easier, more coherent, and more nuanced.

I think I would spend too much time in my head, thinking.

Dancing unexpectedly taught me that there is another mechanism available too.

Quite cool that I found this in such an unexpected place.
