On December 13th, we gathered at Funnylicious for our year-end celebration and our Improv Lab Student Showcase — and somewhere between the laughs, the cheering, the games, the fun, and the karaoke singing, we also celebrated Funnylicious turning 11 years old. 😱🎂
Eleven years ago, improv theatre was underrepresented in this region — at least in the way we meant it and practiced it. We were exploring the improv traditions I learned in the English-speaking world (Keith Johnstone, Viola Spolin, Second City, Del Close, and more) — a different flavor from what was more common locally back then.
Of course, Slovakia and Czechia already had local improv traditions — including Impro Liga and a popular impro show on TV, with much of the activity centered in Prague.
And now, 11 years later, Bratislava’s improv scene is genuinely growing. Other local theatres and groups are offering improv workshops.
People who found improv through Funnylicious are creating their own groups and doing their own things (keep doing your thing, you beautiful Funnylicious theatre children).
Bratislava is slowly becoming a place where improv actually has something resembling a scene. It took long enough, Slovakia. 😄
(But hey — the motorway tunnel in central Slovakia that started construction in the 90s only finished recently… so maybe 11 years is not that bad. 😅)
And the most beautiful highlight of 2025?
Our Slovak improv community, meeting every Thursday — showing up, supporting each other, playing hard, laughing harder, and creating a space that feels genuinely inclusive, welcoming, and joyful.
Funnylicious started as a project by a foreigner — a misfit, feeling lost in a new culture, not belonging. And now, it’s becoming a home also for locals.
I’ve had people tell me, “When I come to Funnylicious, it feels like home.”
And that’s a good enough reason to keep going, no matter how hard it is to do theatre in Slovakia.
Yes, Funnylicious is your theatre home, and we built it together. ❤️
Improv is our art form, our craft, and our life philosophy.
Yes, and… to whatever comes next in 2026! 🥂✨
With love,
Hon
