The last event in the garage at Žellová met its symbolic expectations!

The night was full and we took it! Thanks to MARIE ARTAKER, her words, pictures and books, DJ ĽUBICA SEGEČOVÁ, her sound, rhythm & soul, and all of you, who came, your presence, energy and warmth. Just run through the photos by to see how nice the last night at the old address was.

See you in near future at the new address (or in new modus operandi). Until then – feed on the memories of the previous events (all of which are documented and vivid in our minds). Stay tuned to our web and ig. And once again – thank you all so far.

Last event at the old address. Be a witness.
The good old days of Typogaráž evenings at Žellová 11 are coming to an end. Hopefully to be followed by even better days of The New Typogaráž at the new address or in the new form. Lets celebrate our first six-years run and wrap it up on Saturday 19th October. The program of the evening is as follows:

TALK+INSTALLATION+PRESENTATION+Q&A:
MARIE ARTAKER (AT) is a graphic designer from Vienna and her cool name is in fact one of the less interesting facts about her. More noteworthy and inspiring is her work, portfolio, list of previous and present collaborators, her practice transcending various fields, genres and approaches. We couldn’t wish for a better speaker to close the season and the whole (lets say) first stage of Typogaráž experience.

SOUND+NOISE+MUSIC+DANCE:
DJ ĽUBICA SEGEČOVÁ (SK) is... you know, who Ľubica is. Beside her primary work as graphic designer (and such) Ľubica also ventures into the deep waters od DJ-ing as DJ Ľubica Segečová (understandably: why come up with monicker, when you have such a snazzy name) Allow yourself to be absorbed by the melodies and rhythms of a unique genre we like to call segetronica.

Come to the garage for the Typogaráž final set. Let’s say goodbye to your favorite 16 m2 in Bratislava by enjoying graphic design, typography, music and each other!

Entry is free. Capacity is garage (+ street). Weather is autumn. Talking will be in English (with the accent).

We start on Saturday at 6 pm!

LECTURE: 19ST OCTOBER 2024, 18:00
& INSTALLATION: 19–20 OCTOBER 2024

The last event at the old address (before Typogaráž moves on to the next stage of its existence) will be... quite like all the previous ones, since we are not fans of all the fuzz and thrill of any kind, used mostly for artificial commercial purposes and fake promotional hype. Typogaráž is steady and it is what it is, offering the same quality, no matter the extraordinarity of the situation.

Our last guest will be Marie Artaker. Despite what has been just said: can you imagine someone with a cooler and more epic name to be the final guest? We can’t!

Marie lives in Vienna. (Which is also somehow symbolic for us.) She works as a book designer in arts and culture. Her conceptual approach is based on research and a close collaboration with artists, curators and editors. When we asked ChatGPT about her, it replied: Marie Artaker is a graphic designer who creates stunning book designs and publications that make you think: “Wow, I need that on my coffee table!“ We at Typogaráž don’t own coffee tables or such things, but we agree with the rest of the AI generated statement. Marie does create books we want to have! She sees books as exhibition space, which is a deeply satisfying concept for book lovers like us. Her practice focuses on creating reading experiences that aim to offer enticing paths to access texts and interpret images. Next to a strong interest in forms of practice-based research and the archive and library as curatorial spaces, her academic research revolves around unruly formats that challenge mediation and categorisation. And her name is Artaker, which we, believers in the phenomena called „nomen omen“, consider so accurate and plausible. Her book designs have been awarded several times in the competition for Austria’s most beautiful books. In 2016 she received the studio grant from the Andreas Züst Library (Oberegg, Switzerland) together with Margherita Huntley, and in 2014 the STARTStipendium for Architecture and Design from the Federal Ministry of Culture, Austria.

(The lecture will be in English without subtitles or translation.)

Examining last saturday with Typogaráž: the garage was full, the lecture was heavy and the music was out of ordinary. Honza and Filip aka made us laugh and made us think more about (self)presentation and remember the good old times when breakdance and sitcom Step by Step were part of our cultural conscience. And transported us to another space using bagpipes among other things. Who missed it, missed a lot! It was so typogaráž!
We are looking forward to seeing you again on the 19th of October at the grand finale with lecture by Marie Artaker and vibes by Ľubica Segečová.

Enter the garage! The 5th installment is about to start! The ring is ready & the letters are bold!

First of two events of the already season of Typogaráž will burst in two days!!

In the right corner we have two heavyweight typographers from Prague. Filip Matejicek and Jan Horcik. Their collaborative effort bears the name Heavyweight Digital Type Foundry and so far they have achieved almost all conceivable milestones in their field and conquered the world of typefaces.

And in the opposite corner sits Ľubomír Panák with his Vrtačky po desété hodině (Drills after 10 p.m.), ready to use every imaginable and some unimaginable tools from his “this-certainly-will-grasp-you-by-the-ears” kit of audio wizardry.

We start on Saturday at 6 pm!

SOUND BY VRTAČKY PO DESÁTÉ HODINĚ (SK)
12TH SEPTEMBER 2024
After the lecture by Heavyweight

The latest set of “listening ambient pieces” (under the term piece, imagine something more like an amoeba than a solid object, more a context-expanding coordinate than a specific item) will be presented by programmer, photographer, sound designer, and experimental musician Ľubomír Panák (drakh) with his unorthodox, chameleonic music project. It references night disturbances, passive-aggressive white noise, urban experiences with social overlap, and industrial instrumentation within the Central European context. Picture the cult scene from the movie Π and come to the garage for a new dimension drilled into your mind.

LECTURE: 12TH OCTOBER 2024, 18:00
& INSTALLATION: 12–13 OCTOBER 2024

What do a professional boxer weighing more than 79 kg, the typographical description of a voluminous font style, and an event taking place one evening in the middle of October in a garage have in common? One word. Heavyweight. Our guests are founders and runners of Heavyweight Digital Type Foundry, the common creative efforts in type design by Filip Matejicek and Jan Horcik. Heavyweight (we won’t make cheap jokes about their name, even though several come to mind) was established in 2013 in Prague, and it „expresses the emphasis put on simplicity, precision of detail, and tasteful design, which can be used variably across graphic design applications.“ Their sense for tradition and enthusiasm for experimentation, combined with an extensive catalog of their projects and a rich history of collaborations, guarantees a diverse typographic offering. We expect them to shed a little light into the world and life of Heavyweight Digital Type Foundry, their practice, rituals, routines and myths & legends about (but not only) typefaces. But most of the talk, presentation, Q&A and installation will be about typefaces, because „Heavyweight has produced fonts that are used globally by institutions such as The New York Times, Walker Art Center, MoMA, Nike, On, Rapha, El País, Pangaia, London Fashion Week, Boiler Room, Carhartt WIP, Eames Institute.“ We promise you one heavy night!

(The lecture will be in Czech.)

TYPOGARÁŽ vol. 5
It has been FIVE years since Typogaráž first opened its gate already? Actually – no. It was six, but Corona messed things up... anyway! The fifth season will be... you know what? Let’s cut the promotional bu****it. It won’t be better, faster, bigger or more epic... It will be just as good as all the previous seasons. Because that’s the way it is. (And, of course, everything will revolve around graphic design & type design, but you know that already, don’t ya?!) So be ready for two expectedly amazing events, two presumably remarkable guests and two obviously captivating musicians. Namely:

12TH OCTOBER 2024, 18:00 – TALK

SOUND by TBA

19TH OCTOBER 2024, 18:00 – TALK
& 19–20 OCTOBER 2024 – INSTALLATION by MARIE ARTAKER (AT)
