Visual artist Lara Ješe is an animal artist living and working amid the pristine nature of Slovenia.

"In my art, I tell stories through animals and their characters. They give faces to the emotions and situations I'm processing in my daily life and bring them on canvas through the infinite world of art." Ever since Lara Ješe was a child, she has been enchanted by the entire animal kingdom. At some point in her life, her interest in the natural world almost made her enrol in Biology studies. Howev

er, her love for the Arts prevailed, so she pursued Fine Arts at the Ljubljana and Leipzig Art Academies.

In her art, Ješe doesn't limit herself to a specific style or medium but she remains devoted to portraying animals as her main motif. Throughout the journey, she has also had the opportunity to work with various animal models in her art production, particularly with horses and cows. The touch they added to her creativity was indispensable, and working with them changed the way she perceived them as individuals and as characters in her art from then on.

“Mimi in Flowers” is a small mixed media original painting on canvas. It combines coloured pencil and marker drawing, collage, and 23-carat golden leaves.

This piece is the first of a series where the artist juxtaposed cows and vases. She believes cows are an underrepresented theme in European contemporary art, especially in contrast with their sacredness across the globe.

This artwork is in a private collection in Ormož, Slovenia.

Here I’m sitting in front of the “Bride” painting, oil and brass leaves on canvas. The portrait of Marwari mare with a gilded background was my first attempt at using an equine costume as a part of my painting. Drawing inspiration from colourful Rajahstan I embellished the subject with colourful cloths, nets and metal accessories while leaving a large amount of background unpainted so it can reflect the surrounding light and change together with the light conditions.

The painting is now a part of a private collection in Kranj, Slovenia.

“BW Lulu” is a drawing of a young calf and it was made as a preparation sketch for the colourful diptych Naivety and Inzanzarity.
Here it’s executed in black and white using charcoal and acrylic paint on paper as an exploration of the tonality and character of Lulu’s face.

The portrait measures 85x115 cm. It includes a natural light box wooden frame with an anti-reflex glass. For sale on my webpage larajese.com

“Corazón” is a reconstruction of a ripped painting I repeatedly stabbed in the heat of a moment. It was a part of a larger painting that got destroyed in a tantrum and then remade piece by piece. Here, I used silk colors on a raw cotton canvas and colorful embroidered flowers to finish the original oil painting patch. The silhouette of a horse is sewn with a golden thread, and the finished work is embellished with 3D textile flowers.
The title comes from a glowing stain in the horse’s heart position that gently blends with other colors. The horse’s sad expression is in contrast with the colorful elements of the painting, making it more joyful and playful.

Beautiful “Argari” is a mix of oil paint and 22-carat gold leaf. It depicts a dapple-grey Lusitano horse, inspired by the horses of Lusitanos Monte da Tramagueira. The horse is set against a semi-abstract floral garden background and wears a golden cape that resembles a carpet beneath it.

In 2014 I gilded a live calf named Lulu. During this art performance I dressed her in brass golden leaves with the flour and water natural glue. No worries - no animals (or humans) were harmed during this process and by the time the performance was done, almost all golden leaves fell off the calf’s coat.
Golden calf was the theme of my MA thesis and I explored the subjects of cow and gold inside-out. Besides making a lot of paintings with brass and gold I decided I wanted the real deal - and gild a life calf. I knew I had to start a relationship with the model early on in order for her to cooperate effortlessly, so I waited for this particular calf’s birth and spent a lot of time with her from day 1. We bonded and spent a lot of time together, in which we created a lot of art and unforgettable memories.

“Jago” je igriv portret mladega bikca in je skupinsko delo z nečakinjama, starima 3 in 6 let v času slikanja.
Na ogled bo na razstavi “Slovenske krave” v Mestni hiši Ljubljana. Se vidimo v sredo 20.8. ob 19:00!

“Debela Gospa” je ena izmed portretirank, ki bodo na ogled na razstavi “Slovenske krave” v Mestni hiši Ljubljana. Ime je seveda dobila po baročni postavi, na sliki pa jo soseda moti pri hranjenju.
Se vidimo v sredo, 20.8. Ob 19:00 uri!

“Fat Lady” is one of the portrayed figures that will be on display at the “Slovenian Cows” exhibition in the Ljubljana City Hall. The name, of course, comes from her baroque figure, and in the painting, she is disturbed by a neighbor while feeding.
