Knowing where to start on a conducting career can be the biggest stumbling block. And so can some of the talent development programmes with age limits - how does someone 30+ get noticed?

Into this arena steps PICC 2026 - Pehlivanian International Conducting Competition. The competition’s proceedings are more extensive than is common and are designed to be open to a large pool of candidates. A series of 15 pre-selection auditions will be held all over the world from the end of March through to May this year; diplomas in orchestral conducting are not required for application, and there is no upper age limit – with the hope that a talented conductor could emerge from anywhere in the world, regardless of their background.

Applications are open until 15th February, with the first pre-selection auditions beginning on 31st March.

The finals in Bled, Slovenia, will be held from 7th–14th November 2026.

The first edition of PICC 2026 - Pehlivanian International Conducting Competition takes place this year in Bled, Slovenia – and there is just one more month to enter.

It's open to all conductors aged 18 and over – no upper age limit – and from all backgrounds: aspiring, emerging, or professional conductors, regardless of their formal training, education, or previous experience. An orchestral conducting diploma is not required.

Central to the competition is its Sustainable Career Development Conference, open to all participants and worldwide through streamed content, which aims to provide ‘a clear view of the systems in which they will work and the relationships that shape a contemporary career.’ Much-needed in a world where it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the right support to start a career.

Entries are open until 15th February 2026 on the PICC website.
