A Message to Tired Parents

Parenting can feel tiring, overwhelming, and deeply meaningful—all at the same time.
There are moments of joy, moments of doubt, and many moments that no one else sees.

Your efforts matter, even the quiet ones. The pauses, the gentle touch, the times you slow down and respond with care—these are the moments your baby feels most.

Infant massage can offer small pockets of connection, but so can simply being present. You don’t need to do more or try harder.

Be gentle with yourself.

You are doing important work, one caring moment at a time.

💛 Save this post as a reminder on your tired days and share it with another parent who may be on a similar journey.

When a child is melting down, our instincts can take over — and not always the helpful ones.
We might lecture, rush to fix, or tell them to calm down… but these actually block co-regulation rather than build it.

Let’s talk about what not to do — and what to try instead — so we can truly help a child borrow our calm instead of our chaos.

Instead of following hard-and-fast rules about what layers to wear for different temperatures, it’s best to just assess your baby before each and every sleep. Check their chest or the back of the neck – if they are hot or clammy here, take one or two layers off.

Babies lose a lot of heat through their heads. If a baby is sleeping on a soft surface that their head can sink into, heat is prevented from escaping and they can get too hot. There is a higher risk of sudden infant death (SIDS) if a baby overheats so pillows are not recommended for children under 12mth.

Blanket or sleeping bag? This is something we get asked a lot but the truth is, both are fine as long as they’re used safely. So, let’s cover some of the basics...
-
BLANKETS: Blankets are often the cheaper option. They should be thin and lightweight so that you can easily adjust the amount of bedding to the temperature. To use a blanket safely, pop your little one at the bottom of the cot (the feet-to-foot position) and tuck the blanket in firmly (not above shoulder height). This is to prevent baby wriggling underneath the blanket, which may cause overheating.
-
SLEEPING BAGS: Baby sleeping bags are wearable blankets with arm holes to prevent baby wriggling down under the bedding. Most sleeping bags are fitted according to a baby’s weight, rather than age, so check the manufacturer’s guidelines. Sleeping bags come in different thicknesses and this is indicated by the ‘tog rating’ - the lower the tog rating, the thinner the bag.
