ACM (Asian Civilisations Museum)

ACM (Asian Civilisations Museum) Understanding Asia through Singapore ACM focuses on the many historical connections between the cultures of Asia, and between Asia and the world.

The Asian Civilisations Museum is devoted to exploring the rich artistic heritage of Asia, especially the ancestral cultures of Singaporeans. Conceived in 1993 and in its present building by the Singapore River since 2003, the museum traces its roots to the Raffles Museum, founded in the middle of the 19th century. Singapore’s history as a port city that brought people together from all over the w

orld is used as a means of examining the history of Asia. Special exhibitions bring magnificent objects from around the world to our Singapore audience. Programmes, talks, concerts, and special activities for all ages throughout the year encourage visitors to connect more closely with culture and the arts. For more information, visit www.acm.org.sg

What does it mean to be a patron of the arts today?

It means recognising that art and heritage are not luxuries, but essential ways of understanding the world—and one another.
The Asian Civilisations Museum is pleased to announce a new three-year partnership with Bank of China Singapore, formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. This major gift will support ACM’s Chinese art programming and deepen public engagement with the artistic and cultural histories of Asia.

The partnership begins with Sacred Caves: Dunhuang, Buddhism, and the Silk Road, opening this September. Centred on the extraordinary artistic legacy of the Mogao Caves, the exhibition explores Dunhuang as a meeting point of peoples, faiths, languages, and ideas across the Silk Road.
There is a particular resonance in bringing this story to Singapore—a city likewise shaped by movement, exchange, and cultural encounter.

We are deeply grateful to Bank of China Singapore for its generous support and for sharing our belief in the power of museums to connect histories, communities, and generations.
The MOU was signed by Mr Clement Onn, Director of the Asian Civilisations Museum, and Mr Hu Wei, Deputy General Manager of Bank of China Singapore.

Drawing on his experience as Lead Curator for Design and Architecture at M+ in Hong Kong, where he helped to build an internationally significant collection of material and visual culture from Asia, curator Aric Chen explores how institutions today represent “Asia” through collection-building and exhibition-making, as well as how these processes shape contemporary design discourse.

Offering unique insight from decades of curatorial practice across Asia, Europe, and beyond, including as Director of the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, Curatorial Director of Design Miami, and Creative Director of Beijing Design Week, Chen will open up questions around the future of design, culture, and heritage in the region.

Thursday, 9 July 2026, 7– 8pm
Ngee Ann Auditorium (Asian Civilisations Museum)
Light refreshments will be served from 6pm at the basement foyer.

– with the Inter-Religious Organisation, Singapore

Vesak Day is observed by Buddhist communities around the world to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana (freedom from reincarnation) of the Buddha. It falls on the full moon of Vaisakha, the second month of the Hindu-Buddhist calendar, in April or May. In Singapore, Buddhists mark the occasion by visiting monasteries and temples to make offerings, pray, and meditate. Many also observe the Five Precepts and follow a vegetarian diet. Devotees offer food or alms to monks, listen to talks on Buddhist teachings, and organise cultural performances.

Other practices include the “three steps, one bow” ritual held at Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery on Bright Hill Road. During the ritual, devotees prostrate themselves after every third step as an act of devotion, humility, and perseverance.

This inaugural showcase features student projects from Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Design.

Developed in collaboration with the School’s Product and Experience Design programme, the ten projects explore how games can be redesigned for a new generation of digitally savvy seniors, as well as how play can be used to engage audiences with Singapore’s heritage.

With support from the museum through guided visits to Let’s Play! The Art and Design of Asian Games, students explored different aspects of traditional and contemporary games from Asia, inspiring the ideas and designs featured in this showcase.
