ABOUT THE ORCHESTRA

Musicians' Initiative is a symphony orchestra formed in Singapore.

OUR MISSION
To nurture the artistic growth of aspiring professional musicians to be among the world's best, to inspire and develop audiences through innovation and education, and to spread the gift of music to all segments of the community. OUR VISION:

The Musicians’ Initiative (MI) strives to enrich the lives of our musicians by providing opportunities of the highest caliber. Through innovative

and bold presentations we aim to make classical music accessible to all. The combination of these activities and the values that we hold dearly come together in a union that embodies every thing that we do.

Composed by Ivors Classical Award winner for Best Chamber Ensemble Composition and recipient of The Juilliard School’s third annual Pisar Prize in Composition, join us for the YouTube Premiere of Anibal Vidal’s ‘Thus Dreamt the Anthems’!

‘Thus Dreamt the Anthems’ explores the fragile, cyclical nature of social change, where the struggles and triumphs of one generation are reinterpreted by the next.

Featuring motifs from iconic anthems such as We Shall Overcome, Bella Ciao, La Marseillaise, This Land Is Your Land, and El Pueblo Unido Jamás Será Vencido, this work reflects on how these powerful calls for justice and hope evolve over time — sometimes reclaimed, sometimes repurposed, and sometimes diluted.

‘Thus Dreamt the Anthems’ was premiered and recorded in Singapore at our ‘An Odyssey of Humanity and Nature’ concert at the Victoria Concert Hall on 16 April 2025.

This February, Musicians’ Initiative is proud to present our String Quartet in collaboration with Esplanade! Experience a curated selection of the world’s most beloved orchestral masterpieces.

From the joyful sounds of Vivaldi’s ‘Spring’ to the freezing landscapes of ‘Winter’, and the musical love letter ‘Salut d’Amour’ written by Elgar, every note in the performance tells a story!

The evening then brings you into the ballroom with Lehar’s ‘Merry Widow Waltz’ and Gardel’s iconic tango ‘Por Una Cabeza’. We conclude with a special nod to local heritage through Kelly Tang’s celebrated arrangement of ‘Rasa Sayang’.

Catch us live on Saturday, 7 Feb 2026 at 7.15pm and 8.45pm at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre! Don’t forget to tag us in your stories and photos; let us know which piece was your favourite!

‘Cantus Arcticus, Op. 61’ is a three-movement orchestral work that uniquely blends recorded birdsong with a live orchestra, earning it the subtitle ‘Concerto for Birds and Orchestra.’ Commissioned by the University of Oulu for its degree ceremony, the piece evokes the vast, serene landscapes of Northern Finland and the Arctic Circle, where the bird sounds were originally recorded.

Performed at ‘Birdsong: Your Orchestral Experience’ concert in October 2023 at the Victoria Concert Hall, Singapore.
