Today, my 7-year-old student explored Vincent van Gogh through his famous- "The Starry Night".

Beyond painting a beautiful picture, we talked about:
- How artists use colour to create mood
- How brushstrokes can create movement and energy
- How an artist can turn what they see into their own unique style
- How learning art history can inspire young artists today

Art isn't just about making something "look right" it's also about understanding how and why an artist creates.

EXPLORING MONET THROUGH COLOUR & MIXED MEDIA
用色彩与综合媒材探索莫奈《睡莲》

What happens when a 7-year-old explores the techniques of a master artist — by experimenting with different materials and ways of applying colour.
这一次，我们的小小艺术家没有只是“画一幅睡莲”，而是通过实践，去探索 Claude Monet 莫奈《Water Lilies 睡莲》中的色彩、层次与笔触。

For the base layer, she worked with acrylic paint, building the foundation of the composition and colours. Then, she used oil pastel — adding texture & expressive marks, coloured pencil — developing subtle colour & details and acrylic markers — defining and highlighting small details
接着，她加入 oil pastel 油画棒、coloured pencil 彩色铅笔，以及 acrylic markers 丙烯马克笔，一层一层地丰富画面，并为细节进行最后的调整与点缀。

How different art materials can create completely different visual effects — even within the same artwork.
让孩子亲自体验：不同的媒材，会带来不同的质感、色彩表现和视觉效果。

At the beginning, they were hesitant to pick up a pencil, and some weren’t sure what to draw.👌🏻But look at them now!

For this Mid-Autumn Festival, they created their own stories, their own ideas, and their own art styles.

There’s something so special about watching a child slowly gain confidence — not just in drawing, but in expressing themselves.

From Real Flowers to Her Own Flowers
从观察真实花朵到属于她自己的花朵

This teacher’s day flowers became inspiration for my 8-year-old student to observe, imagine, and transform. Instead of copying what she saw, she interpreted the flowers in her own way, with her own colours, shapes and ideas.

不是照着花朵“画得像”，而是观察真实的花朵，再把看到的、感受到的，转化成属于自己的画面。This is where creativity begins — not in copying, but in seeing and creating differently.

孩子的创意，不需要一模一样。我们更希望看见的，是她 如何观察、思考，并创造出属于自己的答案。

Parents, give your child more opportunities to observe the real world, and let them create from what they see.

When Art Becomes a Safe Space for Big Feelings

My 7-year-old student came to art class after school feeling tired and overwhelmed.

Instead of rushing into the lesson, I invited him to pause, close his eyes, and express his feelings through colours and textures. We slowly created a peaceful koi fish pond together.

By the end, he was smiling and happy again.
As his facilitator, seeing him happy made me happy too. ❤️

Sometimes, children don’t need more words — they just need a safe space to express.

Pure Imagination! Singapore Culture Through a 6-Year-Old’s Lens 🇸🇬
想象力大爆发！6岁萌娃眼中的新加坡多元文化 🇸🇬

So proud of my 6-year-old student's creativity! She celebrated Singapore’s culture with unique modern ethnic wear (Cheongsam, Sari, Kebaya) and turned the Merlion into a mermaid friend. With the Courtesy Lion showcasing local food, her artwork is full of laughter and joy! 为我6岁学生的创意感到骄傲！她用现代旗袍、纱丽和娘惹服饰展现文化交融，还把鱼尾狮变成了美人鱼，让“礼貌狮”代言本地美食。整个创作过程充满欢声笑语，直接被她的快乐感染了！

When a holiday becomes a collection of happy memories…
好久不见，再见也不是结束。

My former student EZ 5+yo has just returned home after a happy three-week art reunion with me. This time, he enjoyed a free-and-easy holiday art programme, choosing whatever he wanted to create. 艺术不一定要从“要画什么”开始，有时候，从“我经历了什么”开始，就已经很美了。

His four sessions became a little art diary of his Singapore holiday 🇸🇬✨
Zoo — inspired by his family visit
Hollow Squirrel — from his imagination
Pokémon — something he enjoyed watching at home
2-in-1 Duck Tour — inspired by his outing with his parents

I loved seeing how naturally he brought his experiences, interests and imagination into his art. It wasn't about making the “perfect” artwork — simply remembering, imagining, choosing and creating.

Before leaving, he happily told me, “I will come back!” 🥹

这四堂课，就像是EZ的新加坡假期艺术日记。
我很喜欢看到他把生活中的经历、兴趣和想象，自然而然地带进画里。

Some students come back… because they missed you 🥹

This summer, my former student EZ came back to Singapore and asked his mum to book 3 weeks of art sessions with me because he missed our classes.

He had stopped lessons last year because of an urgent surgery and had to return to his home country to stay with his grandma. This time, he joined a totally free-and-easy programme — he chose what he wanted to draw, create and explore.

Honestly, I was more touched by why he came back than by what he created.

Sometimes, we don't realise how much a little time, patience and creativity can mean to a child.

好久不见，欢迎回来。❤️

Perhaps the artwork doesn't stay forever, but the feeling of being understood and enjoying something together might.
