Painted in 1983, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Mitchell Crew depicts a series of heads among a complex field of shapes and words.

The chaos of this composition is recognisably Basquiat, featuring his signature heads and repeated and crossed out text. Phrases such as “hall of shame” and references to the Egyptian god Nekhbet and Pharaoh Akhenaten add colour and historical connection to this work.
