Yale-NUS College presents The Future of Our Pasts: History Reimagined, a project to help students engage in Singapore history through personal narratives as expressed through different creative mediums. The grant supports projects by students and recent graduates which explore less known historical narratives using creative mediums, showcased in February - March 2019. The project continues in October 2019 - January 2020 through workshops, talks, and other initiatives.

It's been so fun working with Tell Your Children to workshop and paint this mural at NUS UTown! Every element you see on this wall came from a memory or object with some personal history from workshop participants. On this wall, these pasts have a future. :)
Thank you to the amazing artists at Tell Your Children, and to everyone who shared so generously at our workshop. Hope this brightens up your day!

What can our cooking habits tell us about our family history? In this workshop we will delve deeper into how we inherit different recipes through our families, by engaging in the activity of making a communal soup! Through individual ingredients and group dynamics, each family history is unique and flavorful. // Photos by Jonathan Tan

Objects (like people) have history. They are present in our homes and witness the different moments in our lives.

In this workshop, facilitators Nurul Huda Rashid and Nadia Wagner taught participants how to annotate the ‘familial’ through visualising, describing, and through ‘making’, in order to rethink ways of narrating our histories of home and family.

Thank you everyone for a lively and engaging workshop! :)

Concerts, comics, documentaries, zines, installations: it’s not just about presenting history in an appealing way! 🎨

Creative and artistic mediums challenged our 11 groups to present history with a clarity: How can we all relate? What are our entry points to think about the past? And what do we do with the new stories we’ve now heard?

Many contemporary Singaporean artists and creatives draw on history in their practice! Want to find out more?

Stay tuned for what’s in store for the closing of The Future of Our Pasts.

History is dynamic, personal, and intimate. It takes root in things we all care about: love, loss, discovery, and identity. 🚩

Starting a historical study is not like starting a history textbook – the pieces only come together as you go along. Each of our 11 groups were brave enough to ask a question that mattered to them: be it about a family member or about the loss of a beloved institution. Then they followed the trail where it led!

Interested to start your own historical mystery?

Stay tuned for what’s in store for the closing of The Future of Our Pasts.
