"Dan Flavin’s “monuments” for V. Tatlin series pays homage to the utopian ideals of the Russian Constructivist artist Vladimir Tatlin. Comprising 39 pieces in different configurations created between 1964 and 1990, the series references Tatlin’s unrealised Monument to the Third International (1920), a soaring tower intended to support Lenin’s Plan for Monumental Propaganda. For Flavin, the titling of his works as “monuments” is ironic, as they are ephemeral and use ordinary materials." (Source: minimalism.sg)
