*Open The Curtains* -
_An exploration of 4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane_
Presented by SRT’s Inclusive Young Company 2023

Responding to Sarah Kane’s seminal play, SRT’s Inclusive Young Company members will wrestle with the ideas of social exclusion, mortality and mental health from an atypical lens.

This devised performance will incorporate elements of physical theatre and the aesthetics of access, in the pursuit of illuminating the historical biases against disabled individuals. Open The Curtains asks the important question of society’s complicity - both past and present.

Val is the deejay on a Singapore morning radio show - 'The Happy Place on One One Oh Point Oh'. She is interviewing her old friend Estee, now an Instagram political poet writing about pressing social issues. The chirpy on-air conversation quickly spirals into a heated and emotional debate on their significance and place in society. But as the pair deploy all available verbal ammunition and even uncover buried secrets to best each other, there are several questions that they refuse to answer: Where is Val’s absent radio partner? What horrifying cataclysm is happening in the outside world that the listeners are frantically calling in about? And what impact can these two supposed influencers possibly have on the end of the world?

Happy Place is a darkly comic play about the role of art, entertainment, and their creators in an increasingly grim and tumultuous world.

After smashing her work computer in the office pantry in an uncharacteristic fit of rage, Risa is now sat in a room with Dr Robert, her newly acquired therapist. She cannot go back to how she was living before. Risa must look back on her own life to look forward. What caused her to end up at this exact spot?

Was it her Catholic ah ma whose funeral she skipped, her ex-girlfriend whom she loved deeply but broke up with, or her tendency to feel too much? Or maybe... something else entirely?

So instead, this is a story about distance: the spaces between people and places, the gaps between past and present; and about living in the gulf between what we know and what we feel.

First commissioned for the 2018 season of The Studios, Michelle Tan’s deeply intimate script explores the complexities of personal truth and emotional vulnerability.

A despot has come to power. The population is anxious, submissive, and scared.

But beneath every violation of civil liberty, there are real human beings; behind every act of resistance, there is an individual willing to risk everything. And these people aren't heroic or remarkable – they're just like us.

Through a series of vignettes involving the lives of bureaucrats, soldiers, artists and tour guides, No Particular Order charts the fate of a society in turmoil to ask at every step of the way: is it empathy, or power, that endures?

In a comfortable middle-class home, a family sits down to a celebratory dinner. But their evening is cut short by the unexpected arrival of an Inspector. He brings news of the tragic death of a young woman.

As the Inspector investigates, tensions escalate – threatening to shatter the very foundations on which entire lives and identities have been built. What crime has been committed here? Who is guilty? And who isn’t?

Written with startling prescience by J.B. Priestley in 1945, An Inspector Calls is more relevant than ever today. A riveting clash of murder and morality, class and conscience, Priestley’s classic play asks its characters – and today’s audiences – to take a good, hard look at the troubling disparities in the world brought about by power, privilege, and poverty.
