Where did a lifelong love for Cantonese opera begin?

Long before Chinese Theatre Circle, international performances and decades on stage, Joanna Wong first had to discover the art form that would eventually become such an important part of her life.
She takes us back to the beginning and shares how she was first introduced to Cantonese opera. From those early encounters grew a journey of performing, teaching and helping to carry the art form forward.

This photo of CTC’s founders Leslie and Joanna Wong was taken at the first Qixi Festival in 2023. It was one of Leslie’s last public events as he passed away in October that year. Leslie wrote many opera songs and scripts. In the late 1960s, he wrote a version of Madam White Snake 白蛇传that was performed by Kong Chow Wui Koon with Joanna in the lead. It was a hit. Leslie’s last full-length opera Rage Over a Courtesan 冲冠一怒为红颜was presented by CTC in 2024.
