Artist Ho Sou Ping, an aerospace engineer-turned-artist started painting when he was just 13. But in those days, art was not a common profession and no one propagated the idea of pursuing one's interest," he said. Convincing himself that art should be "done on the sidelines", he focused on his academics and even went on to do a master's degree in Business. But he never gave up on his art. He always found time to paint "Sometimes I get so engrossed in painting, I forget to eat," he said. Despite doing well in his corporate life, he set himself a deadline to retire at 50 to paint full-time. After making a conscious decision to go full-time, things fell into place. He found two sponsors who were willing to invest in his venture as silent partners. He finally opened artcommune gallery in October 2009. artcommune gallery was born.

A major highlight of our current showcase is an exceptional historical work by , ‘Malay Portrait’, painted in 1958. This piece holds immense historical gravity and was featured in the iconic 1958 Equator Art Society annual exhibition catalogue. 🎨📖

1958 was a turbulent time, being the year right before Singapore gained self-government. Amidst Chinese student protests, political struggles, and racial fractures, members of the Equator Art Society believed art must serve a social role to reflect the struggles of ordinary people.

During this exact period, Lee’s brother-in-law, , was working on his epic masterpiece, ‘National Language Class’, aiming to dismantle the invisible walls separating different communities on the island.

Perhaps inspired by that exact same foundational vision, painted ‘Malay Portrait’. It stands not just as a beautiful realist portrait, but as a visual pledge for a cohesive society, built on mutual respect and unity, regardless of race, language, or religion. ✨

Come see this historic masterpiece and other incredible works capturing life under the equatorial sun.

Born in Guangdong, China, Lee Boon Wang (1934–2016) was a Singapore realist painter who arrived in Singapore as a child and graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in 1953. He taught at NAFA between 1955 and 1956 and was a founding member of the Equator Art Society in 1956, a left-leaning group that championed socially conscious realism and the honest portrayal of local life.

Lee Boon Wang was the brother of Lee Boon Ngan and the brother-in-law of Chua Mia Tee. While united by a shared commitment to realism and local subject matter, each artist forged a distinctive pictorial language that contributed significantly to the development of Singapore art in the post-war period.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Lee exhibited widely in Singapore and abroad. His works are held in important public and private collections, including the National Gallery Singapore. Today, he is remembered as one of Singapore’s most accomplished realist painters, whose works provide a vivid visual record of the people, places, and rhythms of life that shaped the nation during the second half of the twentieth century.
