The Straits Times gives a thumbs up to the Singapore artists showing during the Venice Biennale 2015. The article highlights Charles Lim's SEA STATE at the Singapore Pavilion, as well as Jane Lee and Iyvone Khoo who are presenting work at the collateral events.

Apart from the well-received Singapore Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, two Singaporean artists are exhibiting in high-profile collateral exhibitions during the international arts festival.

"Lim’s pavilion had stunning videos of transport ships filmed horizontally, but running vertically, as if sailing up and down the wall. Its most remarkable artifact was a 20-foot-tall buoy, towering in the center of the room, encrusted in barnacles and mussels. With windows at the end of the room opening up to the Canal, this stunning exhibition literally brought the sea indoors."- ARTnews Magazine

AsiaOne covers the Official Launch of the Singapore Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia

"Charles Lim's practice stems from an intimate engagement with the natural world, mediated and informed by field research and experimentation, performance, drawing, photography and video. His works make visible a dynamic coastal ecology, showing how the infrastructures of global capitalism do not replace the maritime environment, but inhabit and transform it." Curator, Shabbir Hussain Mustafa, on the SEA STATE project.

"Already a noted Singaporean filmmaker—and, much earlier in his life, an Olympic sailor—Lim is representing Singapore at the 56th Venice Biennale. Curated by Shabbir Hussain Mustafa from the National Gallery Singapore, the pavilion features the culmination of Lim’s “Sea State” series. His practice, which is informed by field research and experimentation, as well as by photography and film, brings to light Singapore’s ecology—and perhaps a certain sense of national identity—which has been nearly forgotten by the public due to the country’s aggressive land development and its industrial use of its surrounding waters."

In a lengthy interview, Charles Lim & Shabbir Hussain Mustafa speak to Hanae Ko of ArtAsiaPacific about SEA STATE and their collaboration for La Biennale di Venezia.
