United by a shared passion to grow the local music community here in Singapore, The Gig People SG (TGP) was formed to address the need for greater awareness of home-grown music gigs and festivals. With the renaissance of emerging artistry in Singapore, TGP mainly focuses on promoting locally curated music events and linking new musicians to performance opportunities, with the core aim of generatin
g and cultivating a strong support network for local talent. Originally just a group of friends who met at various gigs in 2015, TGP began as a hobby and grew organically into a passion project, upon our realisation that so much more could be done to help bring awareness to the high quality of Singapore-made music and events. In mid-2016, we launched our social media pages on Instagram and Twitter (), and through that, we have been promoting local music gigs and projects by regularly publishing pre-event marketing posters and live on-site gig updates in the form of short videos and snippets. At the end of 2016, after having received an overwhelming amount of support from fans and artists alike, The Gig People (SG) was officially registered as an LLP, in order to expand our capacity to take on bigger projects. As our experience and resources grow, we are branching out into organising, curating, and promoting events or other projects that work toward the same goal of bringing the sounds of local music to as many ears as possible. By being personally present at and, at times, directly involved in these various live shows, we hope to address two main issues: the lack of awareness about the high quality of Singapore music, as well as the perception that such events are too “hipster” or “underground” for mainstream consumption. Being part of a generation that has social media so inextricably integrated into our lives, we want to help fellow Singaporeans experience local entertainment and artistry through a medium they already use frequently, so as to pique interest in and foster appreciation of the musicians we feature. From the content we publish on platforms like Instagram and Twitter, we hope that the average Singaporean music fan, who already listens to and attends live performances of iconic names such as Taylor Swift, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran, will observe that local musicians are just as capable of delivering artistry of equal magnitude. We are also adamant that no one should miss a gig due to lack of company. This is why TGP’s posts about upcoming events are often “open jios”. By assuring our followers that they can go to gigs together with us, we hope to grow a community of Singapore music supporters, as well as provide newcomers with more motivation to give local music a shot.
