This is a listening-based session that combines music appreciation with ideas from music theory and history.
We’ll explore the third movement of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, focusing on how emotion unfolds through pacing, suspension, and delayed resolution.

The session also draws a parallel with the film One Day, using it as a way to think about time, longing, and the slow development of a relationship.

If you’re interested in how music creates depth, and why some works feel more refined and lasting, this session offers a different way of listening.

- About the Speaker

Ryan Zhang is an artist and composer whose practice spans music, design, and interdisciplinary fields. His work explores the relationship between music, culture, and thought, focusing on how sound and expression are shaped across different cultural contexts.

In music, his compositions range from orchestral and chamber works to choral writing, and have been presented across Europe, the United States, and Asia. His work has been recognised by institutions including China’s Ministry of Education, the Hong Kong Government, and the Boston Foundation, and has received the Grand Prize from American International Music and Art Association (U.S.). Selected works have also been discussed and analysed in academic contexts, including publications such as People’s Music (China) and academic research associated with the Moscow Conservatory.

Beyond music, he is also active in visual art and interdisciplinary practice. His design work has received international recognition, including the Red Dot Design Award (Best of the Best), the iF Design Award, and the IAI Design Award (Asia Pacific).

The Macau Guzheng competition is back!!

HSA recently had a guzheng performance at the atrium of Marina Square. We are extremely honoured for the opportunity as well as the grateful to the efforts of our teachers and performers.

We sent one of our guzheng groups to compete in the recent 11th Singapore Yaxin International Cultural Arts Festival and our students who competed managed to win some trophies. Prizes aside, we are happy that our students were willing to participate and from what I heard, they did have an enjoyable time at the competition. ☺
