Teng Nee Cheong’s paintings encompass both figurative works and still lifes, often drawing inspiration from the flora, textiles and rich cultural traditions of Southeast Asia — including wayang kulit, folk tales and literary characters.
His visual language brought together East and West, from Chinese ink painting to the School of Paris, dissolving the boundaries between the two.

The result was a distinctive hybrid expression rooted in the Nanyang tradition — and uniquely his own.

Surrounded by weapons, debris, and signs of collapse, this painting shows how war consumes civilian life. It is a reminder that war is not abstract, it is deeply human, deeply personal, and painfully immediate.
And in the aftermath of violence,
weeds continue to thrive, acting
as nature’s resilient first responders that flourish in soil, carrying life through the remnants of destruction.
