Rehearsals are underway for COMMON ROOM and our actors and creative team are unfurling what a domestic space means to them.

Listen for whispered dreams amidst the quiet hum of the refrigerator, the whirs of the washing machine cycle, and peals of laughter from a long-running inside joke — all under one roof that defies definition of a home.

Join us for COMMON ROOM, which runs from 16 July–2 August! Tickets available at the link in bio

Checkpoint Theatre presents
COMMON ROOM
By ants chua

📆16 Jul—2 Aug
📍Drama Centre Black Box
Written by ants chua
Directed by Claire Wong and ants chua
Starring Genevieve Tan and Siti Sara Hamid

Vivid, soulful, and sharply funny, COMMON ROOM explores the multi-layered relationship between two q***r individuals who have been drawn by circumstance into a shared-living arrangement in contemporary Singapore. In probing the tension of interpersonal frictions amidst the domestic routine of cohabitation, COMMON ROOM reflects on the powerful human yearning for connection, understanding, and community.

While q***r people and community are a part of Singapore’s history and culture, each individual has a different relationship with what “q***rness” means to them — one that may extend beyond the labels of sexuality and gender. For some, it can look like a refusal to conform with the expectations and conventions of a heteronormative society; for others, it might be about finding comfort in a fluid and ever-adapting identity.

From the screen to the stage, from shows that make us laugh to parties that make us want to dance, q***r culture shines brightly in many corners of Singapore. The efforts made by the LGBTQIA+ community in Singapore to keep q***r venues open and q***r events running help to provide spaces for q***r individuals to express themselves and find solidarity in one another.

Fighting, struggling, dreaming, and coming home to each other: this special friendship is what You and Third fall back on as they construct their lives as young q***r adults in Singapore. COMMON ROOM by ants chua is an ode to that crucial element of q***r living which injects laughter and hope into the mundane beats of day-to-day life. Get your tickets at the link in bio now!

In a culture that values romantic narratives, what happens to stories of friendship? AT LEAST I HAVE WORDS NOW by ants chua was one of five original works from Checkpoint Theatre’s TWO SONGS AND A STORY, a video series that premiered in 2020. We heard from many audience members about how much this special work touched them, and we’re thrilled that you can now experience this performance on our Youtube channel!

ants' storytelling journey with Checkpoint Theatre has since gone from strength to strength, with their UNNAMED LE***AN PLAY featured in our WORKS IN DEVELOPMENT 2021, and now COMMON ROOM, a poetic original work exploring the complexities of language and q***r friendships that premieres 16 July 🧡

The concept of q***rness is often misunderstood as a “Western import” — in fact, q***r identity and culture has always been part of the unique heritage of Singapore. In spite of the regressive legal penalties imposed by the British during their colonial rule, q***r people quietly carved out spaces to call their own, and continue to advocate for and offer support to members of the community.

While we have seen some progress made in recent years, the level of understanding and acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community in Singapore still falls far short of the mark. New guidelines offer new causes of concern for the legal rights and physical and mental well-being of q***r individuals.

It is more important than ever for us to keep holding space for q***r people, and to uplift LGBTQIA+ voices and stories. ants chua’s new play, COMMON ROOM, shines the spotlight on another kind of q***r relationship — not romantic, but a deep connection that goes beyond platonic house-sharing or mere friendship, underpinned by the shared struggles with identity, communication, finding community, and living in the uniquely tangled web of urban Singapore. “Baik hati, that’s the most important.”

It’s been an honour watching Krys Yuan, our 2025 Shahid Nasheer Memorial Fellow, bloom into a more confident multidisciplinary artist through her year-long Fellowship at Checkpoint Theatre. During her time with us, she was assistant director for two productions (ESCAPE TO BATAM and SECONDARY: THE MUSICAL), workshopped various works-in-development, and received customised mentorship and training for many facets of theatremaking. As the 2025 Fellowship comes to a close, the Checkpoint Theatre team wish the very best for Krys in her future endeavours as a playwright, performer, and theatremaker.

The Shahid Nasheer Memorial Fellowship is created in memory of Checkpoint Theatre’s collaborator and friend Shahid Nasheer (1996–2024), who believed strongly in the importance of holistic development as theatremakers, and in uplifting fellow artists. We're looking forward to welcoming our newest Fellow for 2026 and discovering and creating new stories together 🧡
