Two melodic masterpieces from the 1880s came together last evening, as German conductor Sebastian Weigle led the SSO in a programme of Brahms and Dvořák.

Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin returned to Singapore for Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the composer's most expansive works for piano and orchestra. He later performed an encore of Earl Wild’s Virtuoso Etudes after Gershwin.

After the intermission, the orchestra performed Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, considered by many to be his finest symphony and written to champion the voice of the Czech people.

The concert was dedicated to Symphony 924, and we hope everyone enjoyed the evening! For those keen to hear more from Marc-André Hamelin, he returns to the stage tomorrow (8 Aug) for an evening of Romantic chamber music with musicians of the SSO.

Over 7000 of you gathered at the Singapore Botanic Gardens last Saturday evening for Symphony In The Gardens, filling the park with music, picnics and a wonderful community spirit!✨

Led by our new Associate Conductor, Nathanaël Iselin, the programme took audiences on a journey through French orchestral and operatic favourites, with our Principal Cellist Ng Pei-Sian as soloist in Saint-Saëns' 𝘈𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘰 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘰 and soprano Cherie Tse performing beloved arias from Gounod's 𝘍𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵 and Bizet's 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘯.

Earlier in the week, we also welcomed a full house to Victoria Concert Hall for our SSO Lunchtime Concert, where audiences enjoyed the same vibrant programme in a more intimate setting.

Whether you joined us in the gardens, at Victoria Concert Hall, or both, thank you for spending your week with us. We look forward to seeing you at the next community concert!

In May 2026, we welcomed more than 5,300 students and teachers from 20 schools to the Esplanade Concert Hall for our Performing Arts-Based Learning (PABL) programme, Expression Avenue.

In partnership with the National Arts Council Singapore and Ministry of Education, Singapore, PABL is designed to inspire curiosity in music and strengthen the connections between classroom learning and authentic musical experiences beyond school.

Led by conductor-presenter Jason Lai, students journeyed through music inspired by one's culture and environment, discovering how composers from Singapore and around the world use music and storytelling to bring ideas to life. Beyond listening, they actively participated throughout the concert, using emoji cards to reflect on how the music made them feel, taking part in quizzes, and hearing directly from SSO musicians during a live Q&A.

We hope these live musical experiences will continue to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of music lovers.
