The “Our Space in Time” Digital Exhibition is now live!

http://bit.ly/ourspaceintime

Our former Artistic Director and Co-Founder, Shai, has been in residency at Centre 42 as part of their first ever Archival Residency. With a small team of designers and archivists, they have been gathering artefacts and interviews with former YCP members to build the digital exhibition. While it is not a comprehensive archive of YCP (yet!), it looks into the different types and forms of space YCP engaged with or provided when it was around from 2005-2016.

The team has travelled through time to find artefacts from those years while also creating some new materials, ranging from playreadings of Tainted Flower (2006) and You Think, I Thought, Who Confirm? (2013) to interviews with the co-founders of YCP and other members. These artefacts and materials bring to life our group’s histories for a new generation to access and we hope you find it an exciting ride.

The full experience (of watching and listening) can take up to 4 hours so do take your time to explore the digital exhibition at your own pace. Do also note that it is best viewed on a desktop.

Our Space in Time has been created by by Mohamad Shaifulbahri (Project Lead), Christine Hee (Project Manager), Kimberlyn Sugianto (Exhibition Designer) and Nurfadhli Jasni (Videographer). We also thank Centre 42 for their belief and encouragement to pursue the residency, all YCP members for their generosity, love and contributions towards this endeavour and National Youth Council Young Changemakers Grant for their support.

This is only the beginning, more…you’ll find out more when you get to the end of Our Space in Time!

After a 2.5 year hiatus since late-2009, Yellow Chair Productions return with new ambitions in 2012. Many new faces join in on our projects.

We stage 2 Main Season works at the Drama Centre Black Box. Lanterns Never Go Out and the seminal, Off Centre. We have a great year with the teams who have put the works up. Some photos of both projects can be found in Photos 1-3 and 6-9.

We also launch the Quarterly Shoestring Series, aimed at bringing established works to community venues in a no-frills manner. We start this with The Star Spangled Girl at the Multi-Purpose Hall of Tampines Central CC.

We start on an exciting note with more plans for the years ahead.

2009 started off on a real exciting note for us but it was also the year the 1st generation of Yellow Chair went on a hiatus.

We stage a triple bill of original works called The Heart Is A Funny Little Thing at the old *scape building. Yes, right in its lobby! Photos 1-5 show how we had to spill over and out of the building to accommodate our really large team!

Another highlight was Eight-in-A-Box where we staged 8 10-minute plays at the Drama Centre Black Box. This was the fist time we had also turned to playwrights outside of Singapore and we staged a variety of works.

While a lot of our members got involved in both projects, this was also a time where a lot of people were going through changes in their lives.

To hear some of these stories, check out our upcoming digital exhibition, Our Space in Time. Coming soon!

The year is 2008. We stage a few production at different CC venues, we present a number some skits and we venture out into a professional arts venue for the first time.

Here we highlight 2 of these productions. The first, Monsoon (photos 1-4) was presented at Sengkang CC. The theatrette which we performed in has since been converted into a study space. You can hear more from the playwrights in the upcoming Our Space in Time digital exhibition!

The other work is Judgment Day, which we presented at the then Action Theatre at 42 Waterloo Street. Yes, some of you might recognise this as Centre 42! Photos 5-7 show the production in the black box (called The Room Upstairs then) and also the courtyard with its outdoor performance space.

Without its people, it wouldn’t have been Yellow Chair. We’ve found a lot of photos, some of which are going to be in the Our Space in Time digital exhibition that will be launched soon but here are some in the meantime.

There are so many shared memories from rehearsals & productions to casual + festive outings like BBQs and parties. And yes, some of these photos are from the mid-2000s!

See if you can spot people you know!

If we previously went back 15 years, this time round we went back 8 years in time!

As part of the Archival Residency with Centre 42, we also filmed a playreading of our 1st staging of You Think, I Thought Who Confirm? by Dominic Nah.

We’ll be announcing details real soon as to how you’ll be able to access some of these materials!

What does it feel like to bring to life a play we haven’t touched since it’s 1-night only premiere, 15 years before?

Recently, as part of the Archival Residency with Centre 42, we filmed a playreading of our very first full-length play, Tainted Flower. Some of the original team members of the play witnessed this and both teams had a chance to encounter each other.

Keep a lookout for more news about how some of these materials will be made available for access!

In 2005, 3 secondary school friends started a youth community theatre group called Yellow Chair Productions.

For the 1st time in a very long time, they’ve gathered again to go back to the beginning of it all.

What we can tell you for now is that nothing has changed and they’re still like the 18/19 year olds they were back then.

Reintroducing Iskandar (Executive Director), Zulhilmi (Technical Director) & Shai (Artistic Director). Co-founders of Yellow Chair Productions.

Available only on the Our Space in Time Digital Exhibition coming to you later in August.

Hello. It’s been 5 years since our last project.

It’s been 16 years since we first started.

A temporary revival come August 2021.

Our Artistic Director, Mohamad Shaifulbahri announced today that he will be stepping down from his role at Yellow Chair Productions at the end of February 2017 to assume a full-time role with Bhumi Collective.

He has been with the organisation since its inception in 2005 as one of its co-founders. Under his leadership, Yellow Chair Productions has worked with many emerging practitioners from the Singapore theatre industry - a highlight of which was the Open House Series programme, a partnership with the National Library Board to provide a platform and space for young theatre-makers with a new performance idea to develop, experiment and devise the work in a pressure-free environment.

Our Main Season programming has seen the likes of the Singapore premiere of Jason Robert Brown’s musical The Last Five Years, revivals of modern Singapore classics like Off Centre and Those Who Can’t, Teach to original works of our own including Tainted Flower, World Aids Day and The Heart is a Funny Little Thing.

We thank him for his service and wish him the best of luck with his future endeavours with Bhumi Collective.

Yellow Chair Productions will be on hiatus till further announcement about future plans.
