Makeshift pottery and ornamental bazaars are relatively common in Tampines. These small outfits, following a concept not unlike Pasar Malarms, are temporary markets for the sales of pottery and ornaments that are used for house decoration purposes. Beautiful works of art can be found here, such as hand painted pots, jade statues as well as exquisite vases (not originals, but they'd never look out of place anywhere). These go from price ranges of less than $10 to more than $100, depending on the design, quality of clay used and how clearly defined the shapes and curves are. Should you notice such a bazaar in your neighbourhood, do take some time to make a visit! It was an eye-opening experience indeed!

Pigeons gathering at noontime over at the field beside Blk 495F. This shady patch, populated mainly by trees with a construction project on one side and the park connector on the other, often sees flocks of pigeons gathering. In the mornings and certain evenings, several residents can be observed on their daily routines of feeding these birds, dispersing bread crumbs and sunflower seeds. The canal to the right of the park connector serves as an occasional watwr source to these birds, but mainly when its low tide. For at high tide, the birds might get washed away and turn up at points further up.

Recently, maintainence and upgrading works were carried out over at the walkway alongside the Api Api River, which stretches all the way from Tampines to the coastline at Pasir Ris. As such, diversions to pedestrian traffic have become necessary in order to ensure the safety of passers by, as debris and sparks during these works can potentially cause harm to bystanders. It is projected that after the works are completed, residents can look forward to a more scenic place for strolling and relaxation.

An early morning view of Tampines Ave 7. As the road increasingly fills up with traffic with residents conquering their monday blues and going off to work, the normal hum that one feels all about the town starts to reverbrate the area. Meanwhile, the construction works that have been ongoing for the past few months starts whirring as workers complete their breakfasts, don their safety equipment and start their work. Such is the sights and sounds of Tampines, from an early morning perspective...

In certain HDB neighbourhoods in Tampines, elaborate setups are commonly used to frame the entrance to the estates. These take the form of ordered lines of coniferous trees (see below), archways with the estate name emblazoned upon it or driveways leading into the blocks. This is part of the efforts of HDB over the years to make HDB flats more than just living spaces. Such initiatives does help differentiate the estates and add colour and vibrancy to the neighbourhoods through the different themes used!

Located at the top of a small hill along Tampines Ave 10, Tampines Domitories is a residential complex that caters to both male and femal domestic workers. This is part of an initiative by the Ministry of Manpower(MOM) to move foreign workers out of dismal living conditions when they previously lived in temporary housings next to the construction projects they are working on. With each room measuring 60-65 square feet, the building has a holding capacity of more than 400 rooms. Moreover, facilities available includes a mini-mart, Internet room and a canteen. Classes such as English programs are also offered to the workers staying here! One good thing about the domitories is that it is located next to a wide, open field. Hence, on weekends and certain weekday evenings, it is possible to see large groups of foreign workers playing a game of cricket!

One interesting thing about the newer HDB estates in Tampines is that they are built in different styles from those in newer towns such as Sengkang and Punggol. Take for example the area around Blk 721, Tampines Ave 9. The HDB estate is built such that not only are the buildings not clustered together facing inwards, but coffeeshops at the void decks are a common sight as well. These aspects follow the culture, especially for older HDB estates, in Tampines. Otherwise, decked in vibrant colours, it looks just as inviting and warm as those of the newer towns!

In contrast to the 7-11 store beside it, this coin laundry is not as prevalent in Singapore. In an age where every household owns a washing machine, it has become illogical to constant visit these shops due to the hassle of moving your laundry around. Having been popular back in the 1990s and early part of the century, coin laundries have seen a decline over the years as the shops faced a low customer base. However, a recent effort in 2013 brought several of these outlets as the town council responded to the request of a number of residents for a laundromat in their areas.

Sun plaza park has a unique feature not found in most parks. It is one with an MRT track cutting across it. This criss cross of nature and urbanisation is indeed beautiful, for it showed the ability of both forces to be able to co-exist with each other. Moreover, given that many cyclists inadvertently pass by Sun Plaza Park whilst travelling along the Park Connector network, an MRT track comes in helpful as they can roughly estimate where they're at and hence help in navigation. However, there is some dissatisfaction too, with some users complaining that the serenity of the park is at times disrupted by the roar of the MRT. In situations such as these, trade-offs are inevitable.

Located near the junction between Tampines Link and Tampines Ave 10 beside the forested area, thid canal runs towards the sea. Being a low lying region, large canals with high water carrying capacity is needed in Tampines so as to ensure that the area does not experience flooding. Moreover, it also functions as a water source for the local ecosystem, as it passes by much forest area. Thus, it is common to see animals such as herons which will dive in to catch some fishes when it is high tide!

How often do you see fitness equipment under a boid deck shelter? Over at Blocks 899A and 807 along Tampines Ave 1, one can observe sot-up benches located inside a sheltered walkway conmecting both blocks. We wondered why this was so. Perhaps a resident requested it so that he/she would not find her workout being affected due to rain (we're having quite a bit of that lately), or is it due to space constraint as the available area of land is taken up by the playground? We'll like to hear your thoughts!
