No dream is chased alone. Our Student Visual Storytelling Awards asked teams of five student photographers to submit 15 to 20 images capturing the everyday texture of school life: the cheers, the routines, the people rarely at the centre of the frame but always in the room.

This year's Photo Team of the Year winners captured the memories of school events: hearts pounding with the fervour of a dream, the roar of a cheer down a corridor, the quiet focus of hands building something together. School spirit is something you feel as much as see, and these teams found the frames that prove it.

Congratulations to this year's winners, whose series are now part of the Student Visual Storytelling Awards 2026 group exhibition, running 12 September to 11 October at Objectifs Courtyard & Lower Gallery.

Ninety seconds is not a lot of time to tell a story, but this year's Student Film of the Year entries used every second of it, working solo or in teams of up to five to build documentary and narrative films around the theme "To dream..."

One thread carried through: dreaming isn't loud. It's a private world that filmmakers are learning to translate into something others can feel, one frame at a time.

We asked students in Singapore to respond to the theme “To dream...”, and received many poignant submissions depicting the dreams of youth. This year’s Student Photographer of the Year winning submissions ranged from liminal spaces inspired by Christopher Nolan’s Inception, to nature photographed as a quiet act of resilience, to the dual realities of youth.

Each entry was a 5 to 8 image photo story, framed as an invitation to turn the camera inward and ask what a dream actually reveals about the person dreaming it.

Ri is a lens-based artist based in Myanmar, focusing on stories within the q***r community, intimate relationships, and narratives shaped by their country’s complex political landscape. Their work has shown internationally, including at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Jakarta International Photo Festival, Kochi-Muziris Biennale, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.

For the Objectifs Photo Fellowship, Ri turns to a project close to them, following a farmer’s family living with uncertainty and doubt, while leaning in to the guidance and support of the fellowship.

Ri is one of this year’s fellows, part of a programme supporting Southeast Asian photographers and visual artists with a creative documentary practice, leading up to an in-person photo intensive and slideshow evening at the inaugural Singapore Documentary Festival in April 2027.

Our fellow, JL Javier, is a Filipino photographer and visual artist based in Manila, working across documentary photography, photojournalism, and portraiture, grounded in realism and the tension between violence and tenderness. His editorial work has appeared in The Philippine STAR, Vogue, and Rolling Stone. He spent close to a decade as staff photographer for CNN Philippines’ Life section, and co-founded Flint Photo Collective.

During the Objectifs Photo Fellowship, JL will develop “Exit Wounds”, confronting familial and domestic trauma through self-portraiture, performance, and archival imagery.

JL joins a cohort of Southeast Asian photographers and visual artists deepening their documentary practice, culminating in an in-person intensive and slideshow evening at the inaugural Singapore Documentary Festival in April 2027.

Meet Jessada Chan-yaem, a trans-nonbinary filmmaker and visual artist based in Bangkok, working across film, photography, performance and writing to explore q***r identity, memory, hometown folklore and migration.

Through the Objectifs Photo Fellowship, they are looking forward to connecting with trans communities and friends, using photography to share and listen to lived experience, desire, and the lives people are already dreaming into being.

The fellowship offers online mentorship, sharing sessions, seminars and peer discussion to Southeast Asian photographers and visual artists with a documentary practice, culminating in an in-person intensive and slideshow evening at the inaugural Singapore Documentary Festival in April 2027.

Closing soon — on the last weekend of Tan Lip Seng: A Life in Colour, join Esther Ng on Saturday 26 September, 4pm–5.30pm, for a sharing on Mr Tan’s colour derivation and slide photography practice, from a conservation and research perspective. Esther is senior paper and photograph conservator at Singapore’s National Heritage Board, where she has spent over two decades safeguarding the nation’s cultural heritage.

Mr Tan was known for capturing what’s often called photography’s decisive moment. Esther’s sharing looks at how he pushed the technology and materials of the late 20th century toward that end, the experiments behind his process, and the challenges he worked through along the way. We’re thrilled to introduce the five filmmakers selected for this year’s Objectifs x Momo Film Co Short Film Incubator!

From Vietnam, Hồ Thanh Thảo and Linh Duong bring intimate dramas rooted in memory and everyday life, while Indonesia’s Ilham Dzauqy and Beny Kristia bring a satirical comedy and an absurdist tale, and the Philippines’ Cedrick Valenzuela rounds out the group with a quiet family drama.

Over the next two months, they’ll develop their scripts with mentorship from Aiko Masubuchi and Kenneth Dagatan, alongside the support of Objectifs and Momo Film Co, in a programme running online before wrapping with in-person sessions here at the inaugural Objectifs Short Film Festival.

Congratulations to the participants, we can’t wait to see these stories take shape!

What is it like to capture a lifetime of work in a single book? Designer Mingli Seet worked closely with the Objectifs team and Mr Tan Lip Seng’s family to bring together more than 70 photographs by the late Cultural Medallion recipient — from his iconic colour derivative montages to a series of never-before-seen images made in the final years of his life.

Divided across four sections, every image is given its own breathing room rather than crowded into spreads. On one end of each section, an index gathers titles, dates, and a selection of Mr Tan’s own notes recorded in his blog. The book can be read from either end, starting from his early career or working backwards from his later years.

The photobook accompanies A Life in Colour, on show at Objectifs’ Chapel Gallery till 27 September 2026. Copies are available for purchase at Objectifs Annexe at a special price for a limited time, both online and offline.

The Student Visual Storytelling Awards 2026 exhibition opens soon! On 12 September, we will announce this year's winners across three categories — Student Photographer of the Year, Student Film of the Year, and Photo Team of the Year. Shortlisted from over 200 entries, their works will be featured in an exhibition at Objectifs’ Courtyard and Lower Gallery that runs on till 11 October.

Here's a lookback at last year's celebration of our youths' aspirations, desires, and identities through powerful visual storytelling.

Thank you to all the students and teachers for responding to this year’s SVSA ‘To Dream’ theme! We can't wait to unveil this year's winners. Stay tuned for the results!
