Siong Leng Musical Association was established in 1941 and aims to preserve, promote and develop Nanyin. Like many traditional arts in their search for new audiences, there is a call not only for the preservation of Nanyin but also its revitalisation through the infusion of new creative ideas. Thus, in recent years, Siong Leng has started e

xperimenting with contemporary Nanyin and also nurtured a group of young Nanyin musicians, giving new life to this ancient artform. The company has toured and performed in countries such as France, the United States, England, Korea and Vietnam. Through Siong Leng's dedication, commitment and determination, they have also clinched the Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award in 2017 and is a recipient of the National Arts Council's Major Grant 2022 - 2025.

We are thankful for Ms Chia Cindy thoughtful article in Lianhe Zaobao.

The article invites us to reflect more deeply on the evolving landscape of Singapore’s cultural scene - in how we interpret, present, and sustain our artistic heritage in a rapidly changing society.

Beyond commentary, Ms Chia raises important questions about identity, relevance, and the role of the arts in shaping collective memory and community connections. As Singapore’s cultural identity continues to evolve, such perspectives are crucial in guiding meaningful conversations and the future of arts, culture and heritage.

What unfolded on stage was the result of months of learning, dedication, and shared discovery among our youth artists.

Interwoven reflected not only the beauty of Nanyin, but also the journeys of our artists who continue to carry this tradition forward.

As we look back, we celebrate the growth, collaboration, and friendships woven through the process. Thank you to our artists, audiences, and partners, especially the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, for supporting this meaningful chapter.

While this marks the final edition of the Germination series, another journey continues. From these roots, new paths await.

What began as a platform for our artists has, over five years, grown into a living classroom for learning, mentorship, and artistic discovery. Through Germination, young practitioners stepped onto the professional stage, deepening their foundations in Nanyin while growing into mentors and leaders themselves.

This 5th edition marks both a milestone and a transition, coinciding with Siong Leng’s 85th anniversary — a celebration of how tradition continues to thrive through each new generation.

As this chapter closes, a new one begins: Exploration — a space where our youth practitioners will build on their roots in Nanyin while venturing into new ideas, perspectives, and possibilities for the tradition’s future.

Interwoven, the 5th edition of Germination marks both a milestone and a transition - the culmination of Germination in its current form.

Over the years, our youth practitioners have grown, explored, and deepened their connection with tradition. This year’s edition celebrates how far they have come, while also marking a significant moment for Siong Leng, which celebrates its 85th anniversary in 2026.

This milestone reflects the very spirit that Germination was built upon: the careful nurturing of tradition, the passing of knowledge across generations, and the continual renewal that keeps heritage alive.

This is not an ending, but the beginning of a new season — where what has taken root now ventures beyond.

"Interwoven" creates a meaningful dialogue between artists across different stages of practice, where past and present converge. Through diverse artistic perspectives, classical aesthetics are reimagined, revealing how Nanyin continues to flourish while remaining anchored to its core essence.

More than a performance, "Interwoven" embodies the Germination Series’ enduring commitment to preserving, nurturing, and sustaining Nanyin for future generations.
