Extending a heartfelt thank you to everyone who managed to visit ‘Dioramas of industry’. 🧡 I truly appreciated the feedback, conversations, as well as the heart warming support of friends and strangers.
Art-making is not an easy journey , but it is always good to know that we are not alone, and that the creations we put out into the world gets to speak its story to those that are willing to pause and listen. We exist in a world that so many stories are being told at the same time, each more important then the other, and I am just thankful for the listening ears which are extended in my direction.
Thank you again to for the trust, and to anyone who missed the show but would like to view certain works, please let me or the gallery know. 🧡

‘As dawn breaks’ depicts the implementation of the night shift in factories, aimed at boosting productivity and supporting women in balancing their professional and domestic responsibilities. Workers opting for the night shift recall doing so in order to manage sending their children to school after their shift concludes in the morning. This work portrays the relentless routine of labor these workers endure, with time seemingly melding together as they work while the rest of the world sleeps. Set against the backdrop of the Beecham Pharmaceuticals factory in 1973, the scene includes a landscape dotted with factories that have proliferated in the surrounding area over the years, emphasizing the industrial growth and the lives impacted by these nocturnal rhythms.

Capturing a striking juxtaposition between past vitality and present neglect, this work ‘Faded Revelry’ illustrates the festive banners and tents from a factory’s grand opening, now weathered and intertwined with the encroaching foliage of an abandoned warehouse. Amidst the overgrowth, a poignant symbol of past economic prosperity lingers: an expensive imported vehicle that once symbolized the factory’s significance. This scene evokes a sense of nostalgia and loss, highlighting how time has transformed a once-thriving industrial site into a haunting reminder of faded glory and forgotten ambitions.

When I encountered the photograph of Starlite ceramics Industry (1969) in the archives, I instantly felt connected to the environment, having grew up surrounded by bowls and plates in my house, as my mum practised ceramic arts when I was a child.
This work uses serve-ware as a symbol of domestic labour, representing how the women workers of the factory takes on multiple roles in a day, repeating a cycle that seemed uniform yet unique for each of them. The routine tedium of the assembly line is a reminder of societal expectations and an uncertain, yet choreographed future for most women living in that era. While the unperceived phrases of a day blend with the factory environment, the products are the only remnants of their labour and time.

Some sneak peaks before the opening on the 6th of July.
‘Dioramas of Industry’ is the result of of my research and work for the past year, and I am so excited for everyone to experience the show. Super grateful for the tireless efforts of my loved ones, and friends from Cuturi Gallery that helped me realise my vision. 🧡

The gallery is is open from Tues-Sat, link in bio for more information!

Dioramas of Industry reflects on our individual definitions of work, labour and responsibility, while examining the societal roles of women who worked in these factories. These pieces depict the prevailing aura of ambition and curiosity during this period of modernisation. Referencing photos and interviews from the National Archives of Singapore, the works on display layer various archival images of factory tours, opening ceremonies, and assembly lines with visuals of women workers under the curious stares of visitors and media personnel.
