Twenty-five years ago, Britney Spears walked onto the MTV VMA stage with a python around her shoulders and created one of the defining images of early-2000s pop culture.

Three years later, Britney’s visual identity was evolving again when she stepped in front of Markus Klinko’s camera for The Onyx Hotel Tour.

Britney envisioned a dark, magical world of enchanted gardens, jazz clubs, ice castles and haunted bedrooms. Markus brought that vision to life in a series of photographs that became part of her evolving visual identity.

Can you still call something counterculture when the counterculture has become a luxury experience?

Burning Man began as a small gathering on a San Francisco beach and grew into one of the world’s most recognisable celebrations of counterculture, radical self-reliance and creativity.

But something is changing.

Twenty-somethings accounted for nearly a third of attendees in 2014. By 2025, that had fallen to around 10%. Meanwhile, more than 30% of attendees earned over $US150,000 a year.

Private planes, luxury camps, personal chefs and curated wardrobes are now part of a festival whose co-founder John Law says has “lost its anarchist soul”.

So, is Burning Man simply evolving, or has the counterculture become mainstream?

The annual Nevada desert “freak fest” known for its anything-goes excess seems to be turning into a turn-off for Gen Z.

Rather than competing with Jamie’s unmistakable presence, David works with her energy. The result feels playful and provocative, but also genuinely collaborative. A portrait shaped by the person in front of the camera and the photographer behind the lens.

When less than 0.3% of lots sold at auction generate almost 45% of global auction sales by value, what does that tell us about the health of the wider art market?

New research suggests growing wealth inequality is making an already top-heavy market even more concentrated, with trophy works attracting an increasingly small pool of ultra-wealthy collectors.

The concern is what happens further down the market. If lower, middle and even upper-middle wealth collectors participate less, the collector base narrows and an increasing share of the market’s value becomes concentrated at the very top.

At the same time, cuts to public funding are making museums and artists more reliant on private support, raising another concern: whether financial power is also concentrating cultural influence.

The question isn’t simply who can afford to buy art, but who gets to participate in shaping the future of the art world.
