Off Root Theatrics Founded in 2022, Off Root Theatrics is a creative platform, an artist-training & research laboratory, and a community.

Nusantara Theatrics commits itself to creating inclusive, brave, and empowering spaces to explore narratives relevant to the region. We are dedicated to the development and education of artistry, storytelling, and theatrical meaning-making through an emergent pedagogy that uplifts play, creative individuality, collaboration and a culture of continuous evolution.

A Light Between Rains intends to be a procession that is full of sound, dance, joy, and vivid colours and images. We hope for it to be wild, wacky and welcoming of all! Any experience in movement, music, puppetry, performance are welcome but not at all required.

After many discussions, we have made the decision to change our name to Off Root Theatrics. This decision has come out of a lot of reflection on our own positionality within Singapore and the wider region, as well as the kind of work we want to be exploring moving forward. We wanted to stand under a banner that felt more accurately represented the both of us and the relationship to our mixed heritages – being slightly off our own roots.

While we have traded out ‘Nusantara’ from our name, we still remain committed to exploring voices, narratives and urgencies from the region. We want to continue to re-examine, be inspired by, adapt and honour our own roots and the relationships it has helped us forge.

We have just finished with a group of young and talented actors at LASALLE who underwent a 5-week intensive of our hybrid training. Incorporating elements of Polysensorial Rituals, Imagery, Silat, and Maskwork (PRISM), they have worked very hard to find power in listening to one another, and a strong sense of ownership in both their bodies and their imagination.

Come on down to Yan Kit Pool Heritage Gallery (5 Yan Kit Road, Singapore 088261) this Sunday for Sport and Art of Silat: Watering the Flower. Organised by in conjunction with 2025.

Discover the cultural depth of the UNESCO-recognised martial art of Silat through an engaging and informative dialogue and an introductory outdoor workshop exploring the martial art's movement to natural inspirations and the imagination.

Join our co-artistic director Tan Guo Lian Sutton in an informal fireside chat alongside PERSISI (Singapore Silat Federation) where they discuss the dual identity of Silat as both sport and performance. The discussion explores Silat’s mental, spiritual, and artistic aspects, and how it continues to shape youth culture today.

Following which Nusantara Theatrics will bring participants through an introductory Silat Tua workshop inspired by nature’s elements. Learn basic footwork that forms the foundation of Silat Tari (freestyle dance), guided by images of bunga (flowers) and air (water), in a location steeped in heritage. All participants are welcome, regardless of experience.

Thank you 🇹🇭 for this incredible way to cap off our year! Thank you Pattaya and Bangkok for the energy, hospitality and the beautiful food! Thank you for your love, openness and generosity in bringing us into 'Shelters for seeds, and all that quietly survives' and allowing us to play & share within this gorgeous installation of yours ❤️ Thank you for the epic rhythms, interweaving harmonies and melodic soundscapes , let there be more to come! Please! And of course thank you to the power duo and for your giving presence, your enduring support and very VERY often your sheer physical & emotional strength.
We had the fantastic opportunity to hold space for and take part in enacting an opening and a closing ritual for Zarina Muhammad's installation -- philosophically not unlike our practice of buka and tutup gelanggang. We also had a blast sharing a very small fraction of our methodology PRISM Work (Polysensorial, Rituals, Imagery, Silat Tua and Mask)... testing theories, exploring possibilities and expanding potential. Participants moved and grooved with us, reconnected with parts of themselves through the masks, and grounded through a guided meditation practice.
It has been a milestone year, monumental even, for us as individuals, artists and as a company. We are truly grateful, refreshed and inspired. We hope to share more of our practice in the year to come and always finding new and collaborative ways to apply this work and make it accessible to as many humans as we can.
