An article on artist residencies and cross border explorations by Shawn Hoo, The Straits Times. Much appreciated when collective work in the region gets shared 🏝️

“artists have a responsibility to raise awareness of the cross-border
consequences of actions that might otherwise be limited with a national frame. It was in researching the palm tree – a species that has increasingly found its way to ski resorts – that she became aware of the need for more cross-border artistic work. “It made me think that borders are not fixed. In Singapore, we are sometimes insular, but all our actions – the way we get water, the way we get sand, even building the Rapid Transit System Link – affect other communities.” - Ubah Rumah artist-in-resident, Veronyka Lau

7 Ubah Rumah resident artists will showcase their works at the 2025 Affordable Art Fair from 13-16 Nov at the F1 Pit building in Singapore.

This showcase marks a new chapter for the residency — together with Nikoi Island, we’ve joined hands with the Affordable Art Fair Singapore and Blueprint Art Space to highlight Southeast Asian artists whose practices are grounded in ecology, care, and hospitality.

In an effort to continue to spotlight Southeast Asian artists - one of the 7 artists will be offered an opportunity to stage a solo exhibition with Blueprint Art Space in 2026.

Come September the Rumah will host Thai artist duo Tangmo and Mahom 💃🏻💃🏻

As traveling artists, their practice has been shaped by nomadic encounters with communities and locales - often creating sensitive artistic bonds wherever they land their feet.

“Traveling is not just a pastime for us; it’s the way we live and learn. Through our journey, we have discovered that we can serve as a bridge—connecting people to one another and to nature. We believe in letting things unfold naturally through the activities we design, creating space for connection and reflection.

Over the past year, we have spent most of our time in northern Thailand, particularly enjoying our stays with hill tribe families. We have learned from their simple way of life, which exists in harmony with nature. This experience has beautifully and humbly shifted our perspective on life.”

The Rumah is excited to host Indonesian artist Made Bayak this month.

Made is a Balinese contemporary artist with a strong social conscience, dedicating his creative energies to activities that directly engage with the community.

Bayak attributes his talent to his mother’s family lineage. His grandfather and great-grandfather were readers and writers of lontar (Balinese ancient manuscripts). Observing them create Rajah (mystical drawings in Balinese culture) as a child has profoundly influenced his artistic practice today.

Since 2010, he has been a member of Sanggar Anak Tanguh (Building Strong Children) in Banjar Wangbung, where he lives with his family. This organization was established by local parents to address the shortcomings in Bali’s public education system, focusing on the holistic development of children through weekly workshops.

For more about Made and previous resident artists please visit Ubah Rumah’s website, link in bio.
