This month, Ubah Rumah welcomes Soufu Honda as resident artist on Nikoi Island.

Based in Japan and previously in Malaysia, Soufu is a calligraphy artist whose practice draws deeply from natural environment. During her residency, she will create site-specific works using ink made from Nikoi’s sand and earth, while experimenting with tree bark and rocks as canvases. Alongside the installations, Soufu will lead participatory “performing calligraphy” workshops, inviting participants to explore the relationship between brush, body, and landscape.

We look forward to seeing how her residency reveals the island through ink, movement, and the quiet rhythms of nature.

For the next two weeks, the Rumah will host Researcher-in-resident Wong Zihao of Superlative Futures, a transdisciplinary design and research studio based in Singapore.

Co-founded by Wong Zihao and Liu Diancong, the practice centres on creative modes of landscape representation to advocate new ways of seeing, and through that speculate alternative futures where cities can better co-exist with more-than-human worlds.

Arriving just as turtle hatching season began, Zihao will use his residency to explore alternative ways of mapping and representing the island—moving beyond human-centred, extractive perspectives to better understand the relationships between landscape, wildlife and place.

We are hosting artist Lusiana Limono as a researcher-in-resident in the Rumah this week. She has a strong interest in environmental issues and handmade traditions.
Lusi was an artist-in-resident in 2024 where she recreated a crystal net installation left behind by an orang laut artisan.
This time Lusi, together with her daughter assisting, will be experimenting with domestic waste material on the island.
“I’m interested in engaging in creative use of other, less-developed waste. This aligns with my concern for the domestic space as a space for knowledge reproduction and harmony with nature.”

We’re excited to welcome Maisyarah (Mai) and Flying Balloons Puppet — featuring Rangga Dwi Apriadinnur and Jefri Mugi — to the Rumah on .

Mai is a teaching artist, producer and theatre director whose practice centres on children, young people and diverse communities, using theatre and puppetry as tools for confidence-building, self-expression and connection. Through her work, she creates playful and meaningful spaces for learning, care and imagination.

Founded in Yogyakarta in 2015, Flying Balloons Puppet is known for its poetic and experimental approach to puppetry, object theatre and visual storytelling. Through the practices of Rangga and Jefri, the collective explores memory, ecology, identity and the relationship between body, material and space.

At Ubah Rumah, they will collaborate on the development of The Girl Who’s Afraid of Everything, a new project that explores fear and curiosity as interconnected ways of encountering the world.
