Mei Lin Hii - Tango Appassionata

An evening with the celebrated, and inimitabe, pianist Mei Lin Hii, where she celebrates - and shares - her passion for South American music

Aiming to bridge the chasm between classical and improvised music, Award-Winning Pianist Mei Lin Hii presents a riveting performance of passion-driven South American composers.

Mei Lin finds association with one such name - Astor Piazzolla. His reputation of being Argentina’s greatest cultural export draws parallels with the Duke Ellingtons and Gershwins of American jazz. The Tango in Piazzolla’s hands, was elevated from its position in folk dance, into the concert hall thanks to cutting-edge harmony and rhythms featured in Piazzolla’s unique vocabulary. This has had a significant influence and following in the jazz and classical contexts til’ this day.

This is contrasted with Brazilian composer Egbert Gismonti and Cuban pianist/composer Ernesto Lecuona - both important cultural figures in the same right as Piazolla. Their music personalities bring a primitive, soulful, yet sophisticated and diverse set of pictures from their homelands.

In this rare, one night-only special, Mei Lin brings years of intensive training in performance and classical music and literacy to the table in a fusion of improvised music through captivating technique and song arrangements. Come and be whisked away to faraway lands via melodies that have been rarely played and heard of in this region!

Doors open at 7.00pm

WOODSHEDDING BY G&T DUO @ The Jazz Loft

Rachma Lim and Ernest Tan invite you for a special evening of musical tastes

Woodshedding”, or shedding, is a term commonly used to describe the act of practicing some endeavor, usually in private, to improve one’s proficiency in performing it. It is typically used by musicians when rehearsing a difficult passage repeatedly, until it can be performed flawlessly.

Ernest and Rachma had been part of the laboratory of Sunday jam session in Jazz Loft weekly, with this consistency while sipping their Gin and Tonic, they had been spending the past 9 months woodshedding lyrical phrases built using the chord progression of a pre-existing song, but often reharmonize new chord progressions, while creating new melody and arrangement.

Take Goreng Pisang “Fried Banana”, Who doesn’t love this culinary favourite? Slick intro, tightly arranged head chart, and a fleshed out arrangement of Dexter’s classic tag, this contrafact of “It Could Happen To You” is a great feature for the ensemble and soloist alike. This tune Fried Banana has become a great contrafact to study the original tune “It could happen to you” today.

This G&T duo would bring you a great number of familiar standards through great contrafacts as well as their own lyrical originals with familiar chord changes with some twist of fresh arrangements.

Band Personnel:
Ernest Tan guitar
Rachma Lim piano
feat. Siti Nur Iman on vocals
Rhythm section:
Arnold Amastra on double bass
Nathaniel Ng on drums

Doors open at 7.00pm
Sets at 7.45 & 9.15pm
Cover charge for both sets $22
