A wonderful oil painting by an adult student. After the great 19th century landscape painter Thomas Moran, it’s a showcase of visual variety in tone, colour, edges, and texture. Methodically created over the course of many, many weeks, it’s also a testament to what can be achieved with oil paint can do when painted “indirectly” in multiple layers. Great job!⁣

Here’s a great example of a “Bargue Drawing” done at the studio. ⁣
⁣
Charles Bargue was a 19th century French artist, who along with Jean-Léon Gérôme, developed one of the most influential classical drawing courses used in traditional art studios to this day. The copying of the series of drawings in the course is admittedly kind of boring. But, it teaches students quite effectively about linear accuracy and tonal rendering. Among famous artists that have trained using this method are both Vincent Van Gogh and Picasso. ⁣
⁣
Here at the studio we go far beyond studying Bargue, but it’s a great idea to do at least one. ⁣
⁣
