Whatever does the archival mean, and how can one think of the archive beyond the (imagined) spaces of climate-controlled vaults and dusty libraries? Through the works of artists Jon Cuyson, Moe Myat May Zarchi, and Miti Ruangkritya, HEAVY ROTATIONS is a group exhibition that explores larger questions of how historical consciousness, social memories, and private accounts are shaped and created in contemporary Southeast Asia. These lines of inquiry endeavour to propose a new vocabulary for rethinking the archive in this age of hyper-networked digital media.

A reference to a practice in the radio broadcast industry—where stations maintain a list of songs that get the most airplay to play throughout the day—the exhibition title parallels the processes by which archival images have been adapted, remixed, and propagated to speculate on the possibilities of collective narratives, past and present.

This exhibition is co-curated by the Moving Picture Experiment Group (MPEG), led by artists Alfonse Chiu, Adar Ng, and Dave Lim, and Esplanade Visual Arts.

A Panel Discussion with Fajrina Razak and Kebaya Societé

Moving away from the paradigm of officiality that is embedded in the legitimation of archival materials, this panel discussion seeks to expand understandings of what could constitute the archival, from positions that are firmly situated in specific cultural and historical contexts of embodiment. Through the works of artist-curator Fajrina Razak, and Kebaya Societé—a duo project by Sufiyanto A.S. (Sufi) and Afiq Juana exploring the fashion history of the Nusantara—this conversation traces the emergence of resistance tactics in their respective practices.

A Public Talk by Dr. Wong Chee Meng

As a heritage area officially demarcated and promoted to represent history and identity of the Chinese community in Singapore, Chinatown has long been associated with cliches. However, these cliches are a reflection of our selective understanding of the past. In this talk, Wong Chee Meng will share his journey in rediscovering the historical development of Kreta Ayer beyond the usual narratives of squalor and chaos—through archival research and participatory fieldwork that seek to recapture forgotten sounds and perspectives beyond simplistic notions of Chinese-ness.
