Demon States is an immersive mixed reality experience premiering new material from the forthcoming album by The Observatory and Koichi Shimizu, with virtual landscapes by Brandon Tay, and physical environments by Irfan Kasban.

Borne out of a time of physical and psychological lockdowns, Demon States bears witness to the fear and anxiety manifesting in the human psyche in different avatars — an unseen spectre, the burgeoning of inner demons, the bogeyman within, an unforgiving hollow absence.

As an oppressive tyranny haunts our present reality, the struggle to express ourselves and seek understanding grows stronger, as we reach for the faint glow at the end of the tunnel. Trapped within our minds by our inner demons, can we release what is within, or do we let the demons consume us?

As a celebration of Singapore's utilitarian ceramic history, we rolled out a project brief to local schools on the 'Vessel' form. As an open text, we left room for schools to shape their perception of the theme. As a participant in the project, Mayflower Secondary School has taken their project into the realms of personal narrative, with reflections on the vessel as a human form. Jason Lim joined students who explained the concept behind their complex sculptures.

Preparations are underway for the ProjectSCN ‘Vessel’ exhibition. Students from Mayflower Secondary School was joined by Jason Lim (founder and artistic director of SCN) in an introductory presentation and demonstration in clay. Teachers and pupils from Mayflower’s art department have been working through their interpretations of the vessel, and they shared their sketchbook work and maquettes in a feedback session. The finished results will be displayed along with practising makers from the Singapore ceramic scene in a group display later this year.

OPEN CALL.
The ceramic pot is one of the earliest artefacts created. Since the first cultivation of the
land, some eight thousand years ago, the ceramic vessel has been a fundamental part of
living. The earliest evidence of pottery found in Singapore was 14th-century shards
discovered in archaeological digs between 1984 and 2009.
And as Singapore achieved independence, it is estimated that sixteen dragon kilns were
in production - fourteen on the mainland and two on Pulau Tekong. Originating in
Southern China some 3000 years ago, these large kilns were brought to the island by the
Teochew.
During the 1950s and 60s, Singaporean potteries were actively making wares for storage
and food preparation. The most ubiquitous being the 25kg stoneware jars to keep water
during times of rationing.
As Singapore's ceramic history is mainly utilitarian, and to acknowledge and celebrate the
island's connection with ceramics, Project Singapore Ceramics Now presents the
exhibition VESSEL.
