53 community groups in Singapore have come together to demand that the
government immediately ban the unsafe and undignified transport of workers in
goods lorries. Migrant workers lives are put at risk every day because the law allows
it. The same law protects the rest of us from such unsafe transport. This is
unacceptable - all our lives are equally precious. Change is long overdue. It’s time to
act decisively and do the right thing. Justice delayed is justice denied.

● This is the second statement in two days. Yesterday, 47 civil society groups and
individuals put out a separate statement opposing this practice and calling for a ban
too
● Almost 100 civil society and community groups are calling for a ban on ferrying
workers by lorries.

Last Sunday, 23rd April was the World Book Day. We are very happy and proud to have been able to unveil the book 'A Journey by Lorry' on such an important day. We were mesmerized by the enthusiasm and applause from the audience.

This book is written from the personal account of 39 workers from different countries and the feelings of 25 local painters of this country are also expressed in this book. In fact, the artists of this country have brought out the real experience of riding in a lorry with their artistic expressions. Opening this book immediately reveals a wonderful collaboration among various creative individuals.

Lorry is a dreaded name for migrant workers in this modern city. Most of the expatriate workers of this country rush to work every morning with the fear of death. Accidents are constantly happening due to unsafe infrastructure. Hundreds of workers are injured every year. Many workers have already become a mere statistics after their death.

Even after knowing so much about this issue, we expatriate workers cannot protest directly due to various obstacles. Therefore, we are trying to convey our feelings to the public in the form of a written document.

We hope that 'A Journey by Lorry' will play an important role for raising awareness among the conscious people of this country. Such a risky transportation arrangement for low-income workers in such a modern city is incongruous. The workers are unwillingly accepting this. Before coming to this city, a worker never imagines that he has to travel unsafely like this every day to work.

We have come to believe that time is more valuable than life in this city! Our heartfelt thanks and love goes to all who came to our event yesterday and encouraged us.

Dear friends of A Journey by Lorry,

First and foremost, thank you so much for registering for our book launch and Eid celebrations event! We are very humbled by the number of people that have expressed interest in our book launch so much so that we have reached maximum capacity.

Unfortunately, because of the capped number of people allowed into our venue, we will not be able to host everyone who registered for our event. For those who have registered via the Google Form, we have reach out to you personally. If you have not heard from us yet, please drop us a DM.

We sincerely apologize and we hope that you will be able to understand the situation that is beyond our control.

Dear friends of A Journey by Lorry,

We have exciting news!

After our exhibition, we (the JBL organizing team) took some time to reflect and absorb all that happened. We loved the contributions and collaborations so much that we decided to collate and print them into a magazine! We will be having an official book launch and we would love for you to come grab a copy.

Proceeds from the sale of the magazines will go towards funding workshops and events in 2023.

The details for the book launch are as follows:

In addition to the book launch, we will be having a Hari Raya celebration with our Muslim migrant brothers and sisters.

In collaboration with Migrant Worker Singapore and Life in Singapore, we will be running a FREE DSLR photography course for Migrant Workers and Foreign Domestic Workers.

এই শহরের অনিরাপদ লরির কথা প্রবাসীদের পরিবারের কেউ জানেনা। যদি জানতো, তাহলে একজন বাবা মা তার প্রিয় সন্তানকে কখনোই এই শহরে আসতে দিতোনা। তারা কখনোই চাইতোনা তার প্রিয় সন্তান প্রবাসে মালামাল আনা নেওয়ার লরিতে পন্য হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হউক। তারা তাদের সন্তানকে মৃত্যুর মুখে ঠেলে দিতোনা।

সিঙ্গাপুর বলতেই পরিবারের চোখে ভেসে উঠে পরিষ্কার পরিচ্ছন্ন একটি নগরী। চিকিৎসা সেবায় যারা পৃথিবীতে সেরা। যেই শহরের রাস্তাগুলো আয়নার মতো স্বচ্ছ। আধুনিক যানবাহনের ভরপুর। আকাশ ছোঁয়া রঙ বেরঙের দালান। আইনের সু-শাসন এবং রাজনৈতিক অস্থিরতা মুক্ত একটি শহর। অর্থাৎ তাদের চোখেও এই শহরের অবকাঠামো একটি স্বপ্নের দেশের মতোই মনে হয়। যার ধরুন এই শহরে আসার জন্য তারা তাদের সন্তানকে তাদের জমানো শেষ সঞ্চয়টুকু দিতেও দ্বিধা বোধ করেননা।

কিন্তু অপরদিকে সিঙ্গাপুরে আসার পর একজন প্রবাসী বুঝতে পারে এই শহরের সৌন্দর্য কিংবা নিশ্চিত জীবন যাপন খেটে খাওয়া প্রবাসী শ্রমিকদের জন্য নয়। তাদেরকে প্রতিটি মুহুর্তে নিজের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করে এগিয়ে যেতে হয়। এমনকি তারা তাদের নাহ্য সুযোগ সুবিধাগুলো থেকেই বঞ্চিত হয়। মোটা অংকের টাকা খরচ করে আসায় প্রবাসীরা যাবতীয় বঞ্চনা মুখ বুজে সহ্য করে যায়। পরিবারের কাউকেই বলেনা তাদের যাপিত জীবনের দুঃখ দূর্দশার কথা। প্রতিদিন লরিতে চড়ে আতংকে সময় কাটানোর কথা। বরংচ পরিবারের সঙ্গে শুরু হয় মিথ্যে অভিনয়। ভালো থাকার অভিনয়। সুখে থাকার অভিনয়। কারণ একজন প্রবাসী শ্রমিক কখনোই সে তার পরিবারের স্বপ্ন ভঙ্গের কারণ হতে চায়না।

আপনি জানেন? এই শহরের রাস্তায় বিশ্বের বিলাস বহুল গাড়িগুলোতে এই দেশের বিত্তবান সৌখিন মানুষরা চড়ে বেড়ায়! রোলস রয়েলস, ফেরারি, বিএমডব্লিউ, লেক্সাস, ল্যাম্বোরগিনি, মার্সিডিজসহ অনেক নামীদামী মডেলের গাড়ি অহরহ পাবেন যা দেখে আপনি সহজেই অনুমান করতে পারবেন যে এই দেশের মানুষ কতটা ধনী। এই দেশের অর্থনীতি কতটা সমৃদ্ধ।

এই দেশে রেসলিং কারগুলো যখন ভোঁ ভোঁ আওয়াজ তুলে রাস্তা কাঁপিয়ে আপনার পাশ দিয়ে চলে যাবে তখন আপনার মনে আনন্দ ঝংকার দিয়ে উঠবে যে আপনি বিশ্বের বিলাস বহুল একটি দেশে বসবাস করেন। অনেকক্ষণ আপনার মস্তিষ্কে সেই শব্দ জমা হয়ে থাকবে।

এই শহরে রঙ বেরঙের আধুনিক মোটরসাইকেলগুলোর রাজকীয় হুংকার দেখলে আপনি অনেকক্ষণ সেই চলে যাওয়ার দিকে নিষ্পলক তাঁকিয়ে থাকবেন। আপনার কল্পনার রাজ্যে এমন একটি মোটরসাইকেল নিয়ে ঘুরে বেড়াতে মন চাইবে। তখন আপনিও একটি কিনে নেওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিবেন নিজেকে!

তারপর ধরুন এই শহরের মানুষদের যাতায়াতের জন্য বাস, এমআরটি, এলআরটিসহ আরও অনেক রকম যানবাহনের ব্যাবস্থা রয়েছে। যা আপনাকে নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে এক জায়গা থেকে অন্য জায়গায় পৌঁছে দেবে।

এতো সুযোগ সুবিধা ভেবে আপনি এই দেশ নিয়ে গর্বিত বোধ করবেন। মনে মনে বলবেন। ওয়াও, হোয়াট এ নাইস সিটি! আই লাভ ইউ সিঙ্গাপুর!

ওহ আপনাকেতো বলাই হয়নি, এইসব উন্নত যানবাহনের পাশাপাশি এই শহরে প্রবাসী শ্রমিকদের জন্য লরি নামের আরো একটি অদ্ভুত যানবাহন রয়েছে। যেই যানবাহনে পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশে মালামাল এবং পশু প্রাণী আনা নেওয়া করে! কি চমকে উঠলেন! এটাই বাস্তবতা! এটাই স্বপ্নের শহরের প্রতিদিনের দৃশ্য।
