DadBots Collective

DadBots Collective Patchwerk is Singapore’s first attempt to combine installation, sound experimentation and visual art with modular synthesis.

We aim to develop mostly improvised music and art in direct connection with the environments to be addressed.

GARDEN IN THE BLACK - A PLANT BIO-SIGNAL INSTALLATION

Bio-portraits are biological narratives of planetary life and for our inaugural series, we partnered with the LOCAL LOCO, an exotic flora and rare plants collective.
The present is best summed up by Charles’ opening gambit It was the best of times, it was the s**t of times. Society has began its split in new ways and there is an urgency for us to do things that minimise the fractures and differences in new ways. This collaboration is, above all, a union of contrasts : plant x code, silence x noise, ephemerality x immutability.

Why plants ?
For its therapeutic properties, mystery, and seeming quietude. But we know that plants speak, we just had to amplify the conversation.
We scoured nurseries and markets before we were introduced to a house green with envy. Fenestrated monsteras taller than humans, charming anthuriums the size of fingernails, but it was the silhouette of a philodendron billietiae that got us to put down roots. And thus, we started work to bring Ghost on-chain.
The Industrial Garden represents a different dimension to plant ownership, one that allows us to ask What is our beloved mother earth saying ?

BRIAN O’REILLY X GEORGE CHUA“we just want to duet with serge modulars”

BRIAN O’REILLYworks within the fields of electro-acoustic composition, sound installations, moving images, and noise music. He is also a contrabassist focusing on uncovering the inaudible textures and hidden acoustic microsounds of his instrument through the integration of electronic treatments and extended playing techniques. In addition to his solo performances and works for moving images, he also plays modular analog synthesizer and generates visuals in the duo Black Zenith and contrabass & electronics with the noise-jazz group “Game of Patience”. Currently, he is a lecturer at LASALLE's College of the Arts School of Contemporary Music, with a research focus on electronic music composition, visual music, and creative music-making techniques through the use of improvisation.

GEORGE CHUASince the late 90s, George Chua has been an active multdisciplinary artist based in Singapore. His prodigious output spans across dance, performance art, digital art, and experimental electronic music. As an explorer of the otherworldly potential of sound, he has no interest in developing a singular style or genre of music. Apart from his solo work and performances, his collaborative interests include live improvisation with sound, unconventional strategies for soundtracks, and sound design for film and theatre.

ONE WHITE RAVEN X JAN RAIN / VIJAY“THE STARS WE SAW”

“When times are trying, we always look back into the past. But were those days always better?”One White Raven’s industrial modulars will be tempered by guests, Jan Rain on vocals with Vijay Edwin on drums

ONE WHITE RAVEN As the co-founder of the Dad Bots Collective, Kenny Png is constantly exploring the dimensions between sight and sound, creating films, visual art and scores for exhibitions, streamers, broadcasters and theatre across the world. As a musician, he was a founding member of Singapore’s first Chinese goth metal band, La’ Dies 灵骸 and post-rock powerhouse, In Each Hand A Cutlass. He only sessioned for rap rock pioneers, Chou Pi Jiang, and played bass with underground metalhead, Meltgsnow.Png currently creates Darkwave music under the moniker, One White Raven.

JAN RAINA songstress on acoustics, Jan cut her teeth touring Australia as a travelling minstrel.
Back in Singapore, she fronts local rock band, Left Hand Drive while playing solo across the club scene on the island.

VIJAY EDWINVijay is a Drummer from Ohio who somehow landed in Singapore and has no complaints about this. CXL X PETER WASZECKI“FEATHERWEIGHT”

In the Greek mythology the siren is depicted as a hybrid being: half bird, half woman, an anthropomorphic head connected to an animalistic body, an enchanting voice emanating from a feathery creature. “Featherweight” is a musical exploration of the dichotomy of the siren. It is the electronic musician’s pursuit of the beautiful and ugly tones, the floating and falling rhythms, the ephemeral and permanent sounds. This duality is also embodied within the instrumentation of the piece, where no-input mixers are played alongside a modular synthesizer. But rather than emphasising their incoherencies, the opposites become aurally interwoven into dissonant harmonies, noisy melodies, and growling voices.

“cxl”, (pronounced as collide) is a multi disciplinary artist delving into both sonic and visual elements He iswell known for innovating an extension beyond “No-Input Mixing”, a technique originally conceived byToshimaru Nakamura, by utilizing granular synthesis, samplers, and modified audio mixers to achieve his soundscapes. As a visual artist as well, he has also done extensive AI based work to generate hisvisuals, which has given him the opportunity to collaborate with notable organisations and installations locally and overseas.Feel Nothing, Embrace Everything.

PETER WASZECKIBorn in the final years of communist Poland, Peter was exposed to both classical music and early electronic music through his uncle, a coal miner, with a passion forTangerine Dream AND Kraftwerk, This childhood experience shaped his musical taste and led to first experiments with software synthesizers in the mid 90’s.Peter’s music is defined by minimalistic rhythms and slowly evolving melodIES,More recently, he delved into ambient and drone sounds using a small modular synthesizer setup.

Michael Spicer has a PhD Music Composition and an M.Sc in Computer Science and is constantly looking for ways to combine these two areas. He has been performing professionally as a keyboard/synthesizer/flute player since the late 1970s. He was a member of the popular Australian folk/rock group “Redgum” in the 1980s. He is currently teaching at Singapore Polytechnic and performing in Singapore with the improvisation group “Sonic Escapade”. His principal musical focus is on building interactive performance systems that combine algorithmic compositional approaches with improvised instrumental performance.PATRICK DONZE Originally from Switzerland, he lives and works in Singapore and is a co-founder of Dad Bots collective. During his time in Switzerland, he was a member of Dolmen Associates collective. It aimed to demonstrate how to originate coalescence of avant-garde music and contemporary art, with events staged in Europe’s biggest underwater lake, the world’s largest dam, a former penitentiary and a tunnel bored through the Alps among many others. He used to play experimental electronic music with synthetisers, effects and computers. After moving to Hong Kong, he continued his sonic exploration and performed in the underground noise and electronic scene. After a move to Singapore, he (re-)discovered modular synthesisers and completely focus on these instruments since then. He has performed with Gunter Mueller, Richard Jean, Frederick Quennoz, Yan Castelli, Keith Rowe, Tomas Korber, Hans Koch, eRikm, Otomo Yoshihide, Toshimara Nakamura, Dennis Wong.

In an era of conflict, rife with uncertainty, just what are the unspoken tensions and inner dissonance that simmer beneath the surface of our being?

Like a cry in the dark, or a rainbow in the night, what are we not saying, or unable to express, when faced with a world that seems bent on destroying itself?

PATCHWERK 5.0, Siren In The Black, is a sonic exploration that plugs modular synthesists into duets or trios with those who express themselves through breath, pulse or just kinetic violence; to experiment if there can be a language that deciphers the harmony in our discord.

Beyond the artists involved, the event also feature special guests from the Natural world, who will be singing their own dreams to those who will listen from a secret garden within our space.

See our other posters for details about “Garden in The Black” - a plant pop-up and an exhibition of NFTs that merge synths, plants and bio-signals.

The time is upon us once more. Contemporary dance siren, Sonia Kwek wires herself to the modular machines of One White Raven to create a bio-feedback spaceship cruising in search of the meaning behind our darkest pulses. Meanwhile, acoustic-electro duo, Black Zenith ( Darren Moore, Brian O’Reilly) traverses time in an attempt to explore how rhythm is a fractal connector between electronic and acoustically generated elements through drums and more modular madness.
