In frame: “Fenghuang S***f Bottle” by Hannah Lim, now on view at Appetite as part of our ongoing exhibition “Elemental Form”.
Hannah Lim is a Singaporean British artist based in London, whose work draws on her multicultural heritage and upbringing. With a keen interest in how art, design, architecture and furniture reflect the relationship between different cultures, Lim creates sculptural works that explore different cultural styles and motifs, often drawing inspiration from Chinese literature, historical aesthetic trends such as Chinoiserie, as well as from her research into Asian artefacts found in British museums. The s***f bottle in particular has inspired many of Lim’s signature anthropomorphic vessels.
Fenghuang S***f Bottle (2026) is a nod to ‘nyonya ware’ ceramics, which Lim was captivated by during her visit to Singapore’s Peranakan Museum last June. These vividly coloured ceramics were often decorated with intricate floral details and majestic fenghuang (phoenixes), considered an auspicious symbol in Chinese culture, but also appearing in myths across several different cultures.
Appetite is open for art visitors every Saturday from 12-5pm; come by to view this, and other artworks, in person, or DM to book a viewing by appointment 🐦🔥
