Struggle No. 2 - 22 Jan @ Esplanade Forecourt.

To acknowledge our own walls and dismantle them in our exploration was indeed a struggle. We learnt so much from this experience. With that we close North South Line and would like to thank , and for allowing us to be present and to share the space, as well as you our audience and followers, thank you for being with us.

North South Line - Struggle No. 2 - Art Went Through

North-South Line expresses the struggles of communication between two camps and the power of art in bridging divides. Led by Tang Da Wu, this work by La Tristesse Opera is an exploratory performance art event conducted in a scaffolding installation. The work's Chinese title《南北限》(nánběi xiàn, literally meaning north-south limit) plays with the homonym of North-South Line's Chinese translation, 南北线 (nánběi xiàn). The work draws inspiration from the poem The Reeds, published in The Book of Songs during the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 –221 B.C.E.) in China, which allegorises the sadness over futile efforts of seeking what one longs for.

North-South Line tells the story of an invisible wall separating two groups of people, symbolised by the North and the South, and the challenges they face in trying to connect with each other but to no avail. Art becomes a way to pe*****te these symbolic walls and for these camps to reach out to one another. North-South Line invites a contemplation of how, through art, differences can be overcome and an impermeable void can be bridged.

An earth sign historically represented by the goddess of wheat and agriculture. This is an association that speaks to Virgo’s deep-rooted presence in the material world.

Our deep-rooted traditions in performance may at times be challenged, but we carry on and grow as we learn.
